How to Protect Your Eye Health in Front of a Computer Screen

The increasing use of computers and other digital devices today is having serious effects on eye health. Op. Dr. Ahmet Taşar, Ophthalmologist at Batıgöz Sağlık Grubu Balçova Cerrahi Tıp Merkezi, issues important warnings about "digital eye strain," particularly common among individuals who work at screens for extended periods.

The increasing use of computers and other digital devices today is having serious effects on eye health. Ahmet Taşar, MD, Eye Health and Diseases Specialist at Batıgöz Health Group Balçova Surgical Medicine Center, is providing important warnings about "digital eye strain" observed particularly in individuals who work in front of screens for extended periods.

Dr. Taşar notes that prolonged exposure to screens can lead to eye fatigue, blurred vision, dry eyes and headaches. Stating that simple but effective methods can be applied to prevent this condition, Dr. Taşar offers the following recommendations:

"To prevent eye fatigue, it is very beneficial to look at an object approximately 20 feet (about 6 metres) away for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. This helps rest the eye muscles and reduces screen-related dry eyes."

Adjust Screen Brightness

It is important to adjust the brightness of your computer screen according to the lighting conditions in your surroundings. Screens that are too bright or too dark can increase eye strain. Additionally, adjusting contrast settings also relieves the eyes.

Pay Attention to Screen Distance

Positioning your computer screen slightly below eye level and at a distance of 50-70 cm provides more comfortable vision during extended use and puts less strain on the eye muscles.

Blink More Frequently

When working at a screen, our blinking frequency decreases and this leads to dry eyes. You should blink more consciously, and if necessary, use artificial tear drops for support.

Use a Blue Light Filter

Blue light emitted from digital screens has a fatiguing effect on the eyes. Using a blue light filter or wearing glasses that block this type of light is an effective solution.

Regular Eye Examinations Are Essential

Particularly for individuals who use screens intensively, having an eye examination once a year is of critical importance for protecting eye health. In this way, any problems that may develop in the eyes can be detected in the early stages.

Do Not Neglect Eye Exercises

Simple exercises such as moving the eyes clockwise and counterclockwise relax the eye muscles and improve vision quality.

Protect Your Eye Health

Dr. Ahmet Taşar emphasizes that digital screen use is becoming increasingly widespread and therefore more attention needs to be paid to eye health. Taşar stresses the importance of individuals experiencing eye fatigue, dryness and other discomfort consulting an eye doctor without delay, and notes that regular check-ups and preventive measures form the foundation for a healthier life in the long term.
