Production of Honey-Look Syrups Banned
Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has banned the production of products that give the impression of honey by adding flavoring agents or honey under names such as honey-flavored syrup, pine-flavored syrup, honey syrup and similar designations.
The Ministry's Turkish Food Codex Regulation was published in the Official Gazette and entered into force.
The regulation governs criteria relating to food and food-contact materials, pesticide residues and veterinary drug residues, food additives, vitamins and minerals that may be added to food, flavoring agents, food enzymes, contaminants, packaging, labeling, maximum residue limits and horizontal and vertical food codex provisions.
Food and food-contact materials and substances must comply with horizontal food codex provisions that govern vitamins, minerals and food additives that may be added to relevant foods.
Vertical food codex provisions containing specific criteria established for food-contact materials and substances shall be applied together with horizontal food codex provisions.
Supervision of the use of geographical indications or traditional product names related to food and their compliance with the characteristics specified in registration shall be conducted by the Ministry.
Foods specified under regional or national names falling within the scope of the regulation may be produced under these names provided they do not violate rights arising from geographical indications.
Measures on Flavored Syrups
According to the regulation, products that create the impression of molasses despite not being molasses, under names such as fruit-based sweetened syrup, fruit dessert, molasses syrup, fruit-based sweetened sherbet and similar designations, shall not be produced. Production of products that give the impression of cheese using vegetable oil or other food ingredients shall also be prevented. Production of products that give the impression of honey by adding flavoring agents or honey under names such as honey-flavored syrup, pine-flavored syrup, honey syrup and similar designations is prohibited. Products produced before the date of publication of the regulation by food business operators manufacturing honey-flavored and similar syrups shall not be available on the market after 31 December 2020.
