AstraZeneca and Honeywell to Develop Respiratory Inhalers AstraZeneca and Honeywell will collaborate to develop next-generation respiratory inhalers using the propellant HFO-1234ze. The inhalers developed through this collaboration will use a propellant with near-zero Global Warming Potential. Implemented in line with AstraZeneca's "Zero Carbon Commitment" sustainability strategy, this collaboration is significant as it coincides with the release of the company's annual Global Sustainability Report. The published report shows that AstraZeneca now sources all of its globally imported electricity from renewable sources and has achieved a 59% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions since 2015. These figures also include the integration of the greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint of Alexion, which the company acquired last year. AstraZeneca CEO Pascal Soriot stated: "We are making significant progress towards our target to reduce emissions to zero in our global operations by the end of 2025 and to become carbon negative across our entire value chain by 2030. Our collaboration with Honeywell demonstrates AstraZeneca's commitment to continuing sustainable healthcare innovation aimed at reducing our environmental footprint while transforming patients' lives." Honeywell President and CEO Darius Adamczyk said: "This work to develop respiratory inhalers using a new propellant with near-zero Global Warming Potential with AstraZeneca is extremely important for both the environment and patients with respiratory conditions. Through this collaboration, we aim to reduce carbon emissions in respiratory healthcare without restricting patients' choices or risking improvements in health outcomes."

Science-Based Climate Targets in the Supply Chain

AstraZeneca ranks among the first seven companies to have net zero targets validated in accordance with the Corporate Net Zero Standard by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). To realize its "Zero Carbon Commitment," the company aims for 95% of its key suppliers and stakeholders to have science-based targets by the end of 2025. Committed to sharing the practices it implements in the decarbonization process, AstraZeneca is among the founding members of the "Energize" Programme established at COP26 to increase access to renewable energy for pharmaceutical supply chains and the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) Health Systems Task Force, which aims to accelerate the delivery of net-zero carbon healthcare services.
