Abdi İbrahim Takes Step Into Renewable Energy
Using Solar and Wind Energy Across All Facilities
Abdi İbrahim entered 2020 with a first-time sustainability implementation. Starting 1 January, the company began sourcing all energy requirements for production facilities at its Istanbul Esenyurt Production Complex from solar and wind power plants, transitioning to renewable energy sources. Dr. M. Oğuzcan Bülbül, Head of Public Relations and Corporate Communications at Abdi İbrahim, stated that this decision reflected Abdi İbrahim's corporate values and leadership, which the company summarizes as courage, passion and responsibility. He said: "With this implementation, which is a first in the pharmaceutical sector, we are fulfilling our priority of leaving a positive mark on society and the world in which we live while continuing our economic activities. We view sustainability as a cultural transformation objective. We are proud to take a pioneering and concrete step in this area," he said. Abdi İbrahim, the leading company in Turkey's pharmaceutical sector operating for 108 years with the same enthusiasm as on day one, with the goal of improving the lives it touches, is adding another link to its sustainability work for a more livable world. With this decision, the company will begin sourcing all electricity needs from renewable energy sources—wind and solar—from 1 January 2020 onwards across its chemical pharmaceutical production facility, AbdiBio biotechnology pharmaceutical production facility, R&D Centre and unmanned logistics centre in Esenyurt, as well as all auxiliary operations.Energy consumption at Abdi İbrahim's Esenyurt Production Complex is estimated to reach 44,405,118 kilowatt hours in 2020.
With the transition to 100% renewable energy use, the company will meet energy equivalent to the electricity consumption of 15,868 households from renewable sources. In addition, carbon emissions from 9,737 vehicles and the corresponding need for 29,211 trees will be prevented. Dr. M. Oğuzcan Bülbül, Head of Public Relations and Corporate Communications at Abdi İbrahim, stated that Abdi İbrahim's renewable energy application will initially begin in production and then be applied progressively across the entire journey from supply processes and raw material procurement through marketing and sales stages to the end consumer, with the company targeting a zero carbon footprint by 2030. Emphasizing that Abdi İbrahim has identified priority areas in its sustainability strategy within its 2025 vision, Dr. Oğuzcan Bülbül stated: "Through work with more than 1,500 stakeholders, taking into account the United Nations 2030 agenda, we identified these areas to simultaneously touch 8 of the Sustainable Development Goals, clustering them under the company's 3 values of courage, passion and responsibility to determine our priority activity areas. We wanted to take a concrete and exemplary step in the area of climate change and energy management, which falls under the heading of responsibility. We ensured that all electricity used in our entire production facility in Turkey comes from renewable sources. With this step, Abdi İbrahim achieved a first in its sector by using 100% renewable energy in all its production," he said.Dr. Oğuzcan Bülbül stated that in addition to its long-standing leadership in its field in Turkey, as a company whose influence is growing daily in international markets, they closely follow global developments and are conducting work to align business objectives with sustainability objectives.
Dr. Oğuzcan Bülbül said the company plans all its activities using the three-dimensional perspective (Triple Bottom Line "TBL") developed by John Elkington, a guru in the fields of sustainability, sustainable development and corporate social responsibility. "In this way, we have the opportunity to measure our company's performance not only by the positive financial results we create for our shareholders, but also by considering the positive impacts we create for society and the environment. Evaluating the company's results from three different angles allows us to see our impact on all stakeholders in the ecosystem we operate in from a broader perspective, to assess these impacts more holistically, and to review our sustainability strategy as a company, making the steps we will take in this area over the next 5 and 10 years more clear and measurable," he said.Advertisement
