Abdi İbrahim Sets Milestone in Global Pharmaceutical Industry Abdi İbrahim, through its Green Harmonization low-carbon packaging strategy implemented within the scope of the HEAL2030 sustainability strategy, is setting a first in the global pharmaceutical industry. Abdi İbrahim Corporate Relations, Sustainability and Communication Director Dr. M. Oğuzcan Bülbül, noting that the three-phase Green Harmonization strategy aims to minimize the environmental impact of product packaging, stated: "In the first phase of the project, we have set a first in the global pharmaceutical industry by developing an artificial intelligence-based heuristic optimization algorithm within the scope of a university-industry collaboration project to reduce our Scope-3 emissions. Through this algorithm, we optimized the packaging dimensions of more than half of Abdi İbrahim's blister products. This way, we achieved packaging savings equivalent to approximately 500 full waste containers and reduced carbon emissions from packaging by 28% per box in the 91 million box segment. We achieved a reduction in wooden pallets equivalent to approximately 6 Galata Tower heights in height," he said. Abdi İbrahim, the uninterrupted leader of the Turkish pharmaceutical industry for 21 years, continues to take steps toward a better future within the scope of its HEAL2030 sustainability strategy, designed in light of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. With the motto "Improving the Future" and the core objective of creating more value for stakeholders by using fewer resources, Abdi İbrahim has designed numerous projects across a wide range within the scope of the HEAL2030 strategy, and one of its most important steps in this area has been the low-carbon packaging strategy "Green Harmonization". Created with a holistic perspective, "Green Harmonization", one of the most special projects implemented under the environment heading of the "HEAL2030 strategy", is structured around three phases: "Shrink – Switch – Recycle".  

Energy savings equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 150 households

Abdi İbrahim, in the first phase of the Green Harmonization strategy called "Shrink", developed an algorithm for the first time in the global pharmaceutical industry, aimed at achieving maximum reduction in the company's Scope-3 emissions with minimum investment costs. Thanks to this artificial intelligence-based heuristic optimization algorithm, developed through a university-industry project, it became possible to produce the same quantity of pharmaceutical products using less packaging and fewer resources. With the implementation of optimization outputs, which can be summarized as discontinuing the use of certain molds used in the production process, reducing some to a single mold, and suggestions for a specific number of new molds and new line schedules, significant gains were achieved in the production of Abdi İbrahim's 26 licensed blister products. Accordingly; through the efficiency increase achieved in the company's production lines, in addition to creating an additional 6 weeks of capacity, 179 tons of packaging savings were achieved, a 28% reduction in carbon emissions from packaging per box, energy savings equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 150 households, and a reduction of 2,500 wooden pallets were achieved, while preventing 90 kg of production waste, providing approximately EUR 1 million in annual savings.
