Immunity Test in 7 Questions As the fight against Covid-19 infection continues at full pace both worldwide and in our country, the virus, by its nature, undergoes mutation and returns to us in renewed form with various alphabet letters. For this reason, Dr. Edvin Murrja, Internal Medicine Specialist at Acıbadem Taksim Hospital, who emphasizes that a strong immune system plays a crucial role in protection from Covid-19 alongside vaccination, masks, distance and hygiene, states: "It is very important to have complete vaccinations, stay away from crowded places as much as possible, wear masks correctly, and pay attention to social distancing and hygiene rules. Along with all of these, a strong immune system is one of the indispensables in protecting against Covid-19. Especially during winter months when the immune system weakens, healthy nutrition, regular exercise and sufficient/quality sleep play a key role in strengthening the immune system." So how can we tell if our immune system is strong by what signals? Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Edvin Murrja explained these signals through a test consisting of 7 questions he prepared; he provided important warnings and recommendations.

Do You Catch Colds Very Frequently?

In a healthy person, catching a cold two or three times a year is normal. After the body fights for three or four days, it returns completely to normal. However, if you catch colds more frequently than this and the recovery process takes longer, it may indicate weakness in your immune system. What should be done to strengthen your immune system is essentially: healthy nutrition, regular exercise, and sufficient and quality sleep.

Do You Have Intestinal Problems Frequently?

Good digestive system function is quite important for the defense system to work well. Frequent complaints such as bloating, swelling, diarrhea and constipation may indicate weakness in the defense system. Drink at least 2 liters of water daily and consume foods containing probiotics such as kefir and yogurt that support the digestive system. Probiotics are good bacteria that provide protection against respiratory and digestive system infections. These beneficial microorganisms send necessary signals to the immune system and help protect the intestines against infection. However, when these good bacteria are destroyed, bad bacteria multiply excessively and weaken the immune system. If necessary, you can use probiotic supplements on your doctor's recommendation.

Do Your Wounds Heal Slowly?

In any type of skin damage, the body expends tremendous effort to heal the wound and renew the skin. Immune system cells play an important role in the healing process; when they are weak, skin renewal is delayed and wounds take longer to heal. Blood tests can be performed to determine whether you have a weak immune system. In these tests, it can be seen whether immune system cells and antibody levels are within normal range.

Is Your Stress Level Always High?

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Edvin Murrja: "It is not a coincidence that you get sick when dealing with an important task or during major emotional changes. Stress reduces the function of defense cells, thus allowing opportunistic infections. While the Covid-19 pandemic has been increasing certain mental problems, especially stress and anxiety, in society for nearly two years, learning to manage stress, acquiring a hobby, not neglecting physical activity, sleeping at least seven hours a day and maintaining contact with friends, and sharing emotions and thoughts through video calls will be beneficial. Are You Exposed to Infections Excessively? If you encounter infections such as ear infections, sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia several times a year, or if you need antibiotics more than twice per year, your defense system is having difficulty doing its job. For a person with a weak immune system, it is very important to follow hygiene rules such as washing hands frequently and avoid close contact such as hugging or kissing.

Do You Feel Constantly Tired?

If you still feel tired despite resting, your defense system may be struggling with energy consumption. When there is chronic infection or inflammation, the immune system may not use energy correctly, leading to general energy consumption. For this reason, consume seasonal vegetables and fruits rich in vitamins and minerals adequately and in a balanced way, and do not neglect protein-rich foods (red meat, fish, chicken, eggs) alongside them.

Do You Have Another Condition That Lowers Immunity?

Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Edvin Murrja: "If you have another condition such as diabetes, absorption disorder, cancer, or use of certain medications that lower immunity, you will need to receive treatment for that condition as well. When you see a doctor, it will help you decide how to best manage your overall health. If these signs seem familiar to you, you need to pay a bit more attention to your immune system. The more you do to protect it, the more you strengthen this system that is the key to health," he said.
