Abdi İbrahim, Turkey's healing power, compiled striking information on 4 February World Cancer Day, which aims to raise awareness about cancer and encourage the more effective use of advancing medicine in the treatment of this disease. The data and information disclosed by Abdi İbrahim Medical Directorate are as follows:
• Cancer ranks as the leading health problem causing the most deaths in the world after cardiovascular diseases. In Western societies, one in 250-350 people contracts cancer every year. Above age 60, this rate reaches 4-5 people per 300.
• According to World Health Organization data, the three most common cancers in Turkey, including both genders, are lung and breast cancer and colorectal cancer respectively; in men the most common are lung, prostate and colorectal cancer; in women, breast cancer, thyroid cancer and colorectal cancer respectively.
Early diagnosis saves lives
• Cancer, which develops due to 90 percent environmental and 10 percent genetic factors, can currently be prevented at a rate of 30 to 50 percent by preventing exposure to environmental factors including tobacco use, alcohol consumption, obesity and infections. Particularly when considering that its occurrence can be prevented, that loss of life can be prevented through screening, and that early diagnosis can add much to quality of life when treated, the importance of prevention becomes even clearer. • Healthy nutrition and increased physical activity, reduced salt use, and non-use of tobacco and tobacco products play an important role in cancer prevention. • The frequency recommended by the Turkish Ministry of Health for cancer screening is as follows: o Breast cancer screening every 2 years for women aged 40-69 o Cervical cancer screening every 5 years for women aged 30-65 o Colorectal cancer screening every 2 years for women and men aged 50-70 • In cancer, which requires the cooperation of many medical specialties in diagnosis and treatment, early diagnosis is of major importance.
