More Than Just Tableting: DC Granules DC granules in the product range of Dr. Paul Lohmann® production facility contain Calcium, Magnesium, Iron and Zinc Salts that provide benefits in numerous applications. The granulation process increases particle size by transforming fine or coarse powder form into physically strong and larger granules with good compaction properties as well as regular shape and suitable flow characteristics. Granules are formed by adding a liquid solution (water or non-binding agent) to powders. The added liquids bind powder particles to each other through a combination of capillary and viscous forces. More permanent bonds are formed during the subsequent drying process. Binding agents in the production line are maltodextrin, starch, PVP, citric acid and gum arabic. From a production standpoint, DC (directly compressible) grades exhibit excellent tableting properties. However, since raw materials are generally in powder form, flowability and dust formation, including product loss, present significant challenges in the production line. Granulated DC grades overcome difficulties during the tableting process due to physical modification. Tablet manufacturers typically use wet granulation of particles before the tableting process to improve the compressibility and flowability of a tablet formulation. The use of directly compressible granulated minerals for the tableting process eliminates the need for an in-house granulation process and provides significant advantages in terms of production capacity and cost.
