Sustainable Food Platform Continues Initiative to Prevent Food Loss and Waste

The Sustainable Food Platform, which works to accelerate the transformation of healthy, reliable and sustainable food systems for today and future generations, has partnered with the World Resources Institute to expand the 10x20x30 initiative in Turkey—a global effort to reduce food loss and waste by 50% across production and supply chains, as well as at retail and consumer levels. 10x20x30 is an initiative being implemented in over 80 countries and aims to halve global food loss and waste across production and supply chains by 2030 in order to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG Target 12.3). Through this partnership, the Sustainable Food Platform and WRI invite all retailers and food producers to participate in the 10x20x30 initiative. The initiative aims to significantly increase private-sector contributions toward this goal by driving greater effort at the 'upper segment' of the supply chain. Online training programs, beginning in the coming days through the partnership between the Sustainable Food Platform and WRI, are aimed at all participating companies and seek to raise awareness in the food sector, systematically measure and record food waste, and measurably prevent food waste. According to the United Nations Food Waste Report, 931 million tons of food are wasted globally each year. Turkey, where 7.7 million tons of food are discarded annually, ranks third among the 10 countries with the highest per-capita food waste.   Beyond food loss and waste, projections presented in reports showing that 300 million people worldwide will face hunger by 2050 demonstrate that it is long past time to take action to reverse this trend.

Migros became the first retail company from Turkey to join the "10x20x30" initiative and continues its efforts with 23 suppliers.

Metro Market, another SGP member, launched Turkey's portion of the 10x20x30 initiative, which it is implementing globally with 20 suppliers, and continues its work with 21 suppliers.

SGP takes action against food waste in the food sector through international partnerships!

The Sustainable Food Platform is leading efforts to expand the project throughout Turkey's food sector. Developing partnerships with all stakeholders—national and international organizations, brands, non-profit companies and initiatives, civil society organizations, universities, and research institutes—the Platform is launching educational initiatives to reduce food waste in the country. These trainings will be conducted online and open to all participants in the food sector, in collaboration with WRI and with participation from SGP members.

SGP will provide guidance on recording food loss and waste across Turkey in the global ATLAS program

These trainings will be conducted under the Global Food Loss and Waste Prevention Protocol (FLW). The Sustainable Food Platform will ensure that these companies regularly record food loss and waste in the ATLAS program developed by WRI.
