10 Foods Athletes Should Eat

As autumn brings increased traffic to fitness clubs, experts emphasize the importance of establishing the right balance between exercise and nutrition. Kumsal Kurucu, Specialist Dietitian at Acıbadem LifeClub Healthy Living Services, explained athlete-friendly foods.

With the arrival of autumn, gym memberships begin to pick up. Many people aim to enter a regular training routine to shed the pounds gained during the summer and the relaxation of vacation. The comfort of the holiday period and irregular habits can create challenges when returning to a normal living routine. For this reason, returning to exercise after vacation is a good opportunity to get in shape and reach new goals.

When starting an exercise program, the foods consumed are as important as the exercises performed. This is because there is a close, mutually supportive relationship between exercise and nutrition.

Pointing out that exercise without proper nutrition can cause many adverse effects on the body, Kumsal Kurucu, Specialist Dietitian at Acıbadem LifeClub, listed 10 athlete-friendly foods as follows:

1. Banana and Date

Banana, in particular, is an excellent muscle supporter as a source of potassium and magnesium. It helps prevent cramps during exercise and provides quick energy thanks to its potassium content. It also helps maintain blood pressure balance.

2. Oats

Oats are rich in fibers that provide sustained energy. This ensures stable energy release and allows us to strengthen our muscles through longer training sessions without fatigue. You can consume oats, which are a good source of selenium and magnesium, 60 minutes before exercise. Oats, containing zinc, iron, manganese, vitamin E and B complex vitamins, contain 14 grams of plant-based protein per 100 grams. It is a quality plant-based protein source.

3. Sweet Potato

Sweet potato, a healthy carbohydrate that fuels your muscles, provides important minerals such as potassium and manganese that help reduce muscle cramps and increase endurance. Due to its low glycemic index, it does not rapidly raise blood sugar and is an important source of vitamins A, C, and B6.

4. Red Beet

Red beet, particularly when consumed in the form of beet juice, increases your exercise endurance and performance.  The nitrates in red beets are converted to nitric oxide (NO) in the body, which plays an important role in improving blood flow and oxygen delivery to muscles during vasodilation. Increased blood flow and oxygen quantity allow muscles to work more efficiently and delay fatigue. It makes it easier for you to exercise for longer periods.

5. Egg

Eggs provide all the essential amino acids needed for muscle repair and growth after exercise. With their high-quality protein content, they are excellent for improving exercise performance. In particular, leucine amino acid, which is abundant in eggs, stimulates muscle protein synthesis, which aids in muscle recovery after exercise. Additionally, eggs contain essential vitamins like B12 that support energy metabolism and healthy fats that contribute to sustained energy levels. This nutrient combination helps increase muscle strength, recovery, and muscle endurance.

6. Yogurt and Kefir

Yogurt and kefir enhance exercise performance thanks to their rich probiotic and high-quality protein content. They reduce inflammation for overall health maintenance and, particularly whey, provides essential amino acids that support muscle repair and growth after exercise. Additionally, kefir and yogurt contain calcium and B vitamins that are vital for muscle function and energy metabolism. If you want maximum benefit, you can consume buffalo yogurt, goat yogurt, or kefir.

7. Quinoa and Chia Seeds

Quinoa and chia seeds enhance exercise performance through their rich and balanced nutritional profiles. In particular, quinoa contains all the essential amino acids needed to support muscle repair and growth, and its high fiber content helps maintain and protect stable energy levels throughout the exercise period. Chia seeds, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, are very valuable for endurance training and support cardiovascular health.

8. Raw Nuts

Raw nuts are an excellent energy source, particularly for endurance exercise. Their high protein content helps with muscle repair and recovery after exercise, while their fiber and healthy fat content prevent energy drops during prolonged physical activity and provide continuous energy release. Additionally, they are filled with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals such as magnesium that help reduce oxidative stress. They contribute to improved athletic performance and muscle recovery.

9. Salmon and Red Meat

Salmon, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, supports cardiovascular health, reduces inflammation, and improves muscle repair. All of these are critical for muscle endurance and recovery. The high-quality proteins in salmon help with muscle repair and growth.

Red meat contains iron, zinc, and B vitamins needed for oxygen transport, energy metabolism, and muscle function. It is a powerful protein source. You can include both salmon and red meat in your diet to support athletic performance.

10. Goat Cheese and Tofu

Goat cheese aids muscle repair, which is vital for endurance and recovery after exercise. It is rich in high-quality protein, healthy fats, and calcium that support bone health and energy metabolism. Tofu, a plant-based protein source, contains less fat and contains all nine essential amino acids found in the meat group. This makes it an excellent plant-based protein source. When comparing their protein content, 100 grams of goat cheese contains approximately 21 grams of protein, while 100 grams of tofu contains approximately 8 grams of protein. 100 grams of lean red meat contains approximately 25-26 grams of protein.
