5 Tips for a Healthy Ramadan
Five Tips for a Healthy Ramadan
During Ramadan, meal frequency is reduced to two meals—suhoor and iftar—so the foods consumed at these meals must provide the complete daily energy and nutrient intake. Therefore, adequate vitamin and mineral intake must be ensured at both meals.
Providing the body with the nutrients it needs is also very important for supporting immunity. Sleep patterns and meal composition are also critical for maintaining health.
For people without any health problems, fasting during Ramadan has positive effects on overall health. However, neglecting nutrition and sleep routines during this period can lead to certain health issues.
Paying attention to the foods consumed especially at iftar and suhoor and maintaining a sleep routine are of great importance. After suhoor, one should not start the day without sleeping, and if unable to sleep, daytime sleep needs must be met. Additionally, one should not complete suhoor with a heavy meal such as fried foods and then immediately sleep.
Things to consider for spending Ramadan in a healthy way:
1. Vary your meals
A balanced diet containing abundant fruits, vegetables, whole grains, plant and animal proteins, and healthy fats provides all the essential nutrients needed for a strong immune system. During Ramadan, our meal frequency is reduced to two main meals—iftar and suhoor. Therefore, meals should be varied at iftar and suhoor, and monotonous eating should be avoided. To ensure dietary diversity and energy balance: • Avoid fast-food style eating that leads to excessive energy intake, • Switch to smaller portions, • Begin iftar with lighter foods such as salad and soup to prevent overeating, then consume the main course, • Consume more seasonal vegetables and fruits, • Prefer healthy fats such as olive oil instead of saturated fats, • Consume whole grain foods and fiber-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables to stay full throughout the day, • Choose dairy desserts for the post-iftar sweet option or prefer fruit salad.2. Drink plenty of water between iftar and suhoor
Ensuring adequate fluid intake throughout the day is also among the most important matters for overall health. Adequate fluid intake is very important for removing toxins from the body. During Ramadan, water that cannot be consumed throughout the day must be compensated by abundant fluid consumption between iftar and suhoor. Therefore, one should not wait for thirst before consuming water. However, attempting to drink several liters of water at once during iftar can disrupt your body's electrolyte balance. If you have difficulty drinking water, you can add sliced lemon, cucumber, mint, or fruits to make it more refreshing. On the other hand, when consuming fluids, caffeine-free beverages should be consumed as caffeine reduces body water.3. Stay physically active
The reduction in meal frequency during Ramadan can also lead to constipation problems. Being physically active benefits both physical and mental health. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that healthy adults engage in 30 minutes of physical activity daily, and children for one hour. Although fasting can be physically taxing, complete immobility throughout the day should be avoided. If you normally exercise in the morning, you can plan your daily exercise for after iftar. However, if engaging in physical activity on an empty stomach does not cause any health problems, you can perform your daily exercise at any time during the day before iftar. Since your body may be without water during the day due to fasting, it is beneficial to avoid strenuous exercise during the fasting period. Continue moving throughout the day by using stairs instead of elevators, standing and moving at regular intervals while working or at home. Additionally, consuming abundant water and seasonal fruits instead of desserts after iftar will help prevent constipation problems.4. Get adequate quality sleep
Poor sleep quality negatively affects both our physical and mental health. While sleep duration varies by age, one should sleep at least 7 hours of quality sleep per day. Even if you do not sleep after suhoor, you should take short rest breaks during the day to ensure your daily sleep duration reaches at least 7 hours. Here are some tips to help improve your sleep: • Establish a regular sleep schedule. (Sleep in the bedroom, sleep and wake at the same times, brush teeth before bed to mentally prepare the body for sleep) • Avoid smoking. • Avoid consuming caffeinated beverages such as coffee before bed. • Exercise regularly. • Ensure the room where you sleep is quiet and dark. • Try relaxation methods such as meditation to fall asleep more easily.5. Renew your energy levels with a healthy and balanced iftar
Breaking your fast with a date is a traditional and healthy way to begin iftar. Dates are an excellent source of fiber. In addition, add abundant vegetables to your plate for the vitamins and minerals you need. Do not forget whole grains that provide energy and fiber to the body. Grilled or baked lean meat, skinless chicken, fish, or legumes can be included in the main meal as a protein source. In general, avoid fried and processed foods with high fat or sugar content. It is recommended to use other healthy cooking methods such as steaming, pan-frying with little oil, and baking instead of deep frying. Avoid consuming large amounts of desserts after the iftar meal. For the dish that comes to mind with Ramadan, try making güllacı with fruits and walnuts. This way, you will consume the fruits and oily seeds that you could not consume throughout the day. Alternatively, you can use your dessert allowance on fresh seasonal fruits. After iftar, you can prioritize fresh and dried fruits or use your dessert preference for dairy desserts. Portion control in this section prevents weight gain and prevents stomach complaints after iftar. Avoid foods containing excessive salt (processed and salted meat and fish products, olives and pickles, snack foods, salted cheeses, salted crackers, etc.). Limit salt use when preparing food as much as possible. To enhance the flavor of cooked foods, you can use spices such as cumin, mint, and thyme.Advertisement
