Nestlé, expanding the scope of the Nescafé Plan it launched 10 years ago, will invest over 1 billion Swiss francs by 2030 to support regenerative agriculture practices in coffee production. Nestlé is accelerating its sustainability efforts in line with its commitment to reach "Net Zero" emissions by 2050. Taking sustainability as its starting point, Nestlé has embarked on the "Generation Regeneration" journey with a "protect-restore-replace" vision, placing regenerative agriculture practices at the forefront. Operating in 186 countries worldwide, Nestlé continues its "Generation Regeneration" journey, which was launched last year and focuses on regenerative agriculture practices, in line with its commitment to reach "Net Zero" emissions by 2050. Aiming to source the raw materials it uses in coffee and chocolate from sustainable farming practices, Nestlé has expanded the Nescafé Plan it implemented in 2010 under Nescafé leadership with a strategic initiative extending to 2030.
Regenerative Agriculture: Hand in Hand with Farmers
Nestlé will invest over 1 billion Swiss francs for the Nescafé 2030 Plan. The company will work hand in hand with farmers in the transition to regenerative coffee farming to reduce carbon emissions, ensure the coffee sector's growth for future generations, and equip farmers with the skills they need.
Target: 50 Percent Regenerative Agriculture in Coffee by 2030
With the Nescafé 2030 Plan, Nestlé aims to create real global-scale impact on coffee farming. Through its new practices, it will contribute to the protection of agricultural land, the improvement of biodiversity, and the prevention of deforestation. Nestlé will provide farmers with training opportunities, technical assistance, and high-yield coffee seedlings in the transition to sustainable coffee farming practices. Adopting the target of sourcing 50 percent of the coffee beans it procures from regenerative agriculture practices by 2030, the company will also work together with farmers to evaluate regenerative farming practices. Within this scope, it will focus on seven key origin countries from which it sources 90 percent of its coffee: Brazil, Vietnam, Mexico, Colombia, Ivory Coast, Indonesia, and Honduras. Nescafé will plant 20 million trees within and around coffee farms by 2026 to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Zeynep Sungu, Nestlé Turkey Marketing and Corporate Communications Director, stating that regenerative agriculture is a key area in Nestlé's Net Zero roadmap, made the following remarks about the new plan:
"Last year, we launched a global journey under the banner 'Generation Regeneration' with the aim of going beyond sustainability. The Nescafé 2030 Plan is an important part of this journey. Regenerative agriculture, which lies at the heart of the plan, contributes to capturing carbon in the soil and removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. With this plan supporting our goal to improve and restore the planet, we will revitalize regenerative agriculture in coffee production and increase soil health and productivity. In this way, we will reduce our environmental impact while contributing to the welfare of farmers."
Hüseyin Necdet Kalkan, General Manager of Nestlé Turkey Nescafé Business Unit, added:
"As Nescafé, the world's leading coffee brand touching the lives of millions of people, we aim to create real impact on global coffee farming. Just as we want coffee to have a positive impact on the environment and nature, we also want farmers whose livelihoods depend on coffee to progress and develop socially and economically. To this end, by taking sustainable steps globally and expanding the scope of the project we have left behind over a 10-year process, we have created the Nescafé 2030 Plan on a global scale. We work together with farmers to help them transition to regenerative agriculture practices, and we continue to provide them with solutions for improvement through training, technical assistance, and high-yield coffee seedlings. In this way, by redesigning our value chain, we are removing carbon from the soil toward our Net Zero target and optimizing our operations to combat climate change. We believe that all of these efforts, along with coffee farming, will help bring about positive change in the environment and the entire world."
