Why Should We Eat Strawberries? Strawberries, among the most beloved fruits of spring and summer, stand out not only for their taste but also for their effects on our health! Strawberries rank among the fruits richest in vitamin C. By consuming a daily portion of strawberries, you can more than meet your vitamin C needs. At the same time, they are a complete treasure trove of health benefits, containing many compounds from vitamin A to potassium, from calcium to magnesium. Thanks to their low glycemic index, they do not cause sudden fluctuations in blood sugar, so consuming 10 strawberries a day is beneficial. A complete vitamin C store, but beware! Acıbadem Kozyatağı Hospital Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Ayşe Sena Binöz notes that strawberries can cause allergic reactions, particularly in children, stating: "Allergic reactions can develop as a result of the immune system reacting excessively to the protein contained in strawberries. If there are allergy problems to birch pollen or apples, a secondary food allergy to strawberries may develop. If you experience symptoms such as tingling or itching in the mouth, dizziness, swelling in the lips, tongue or throat, respiratory problems, rash, or diarrhea after eating strawberries, it is advisable to consult a doctor," she says. Acıbadem Kozyatağı Hospital Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Ayşe Sena Binöz explained the benefits of strawberries for our health and made important recommendations. Effective against cholesterol Strawberries play a role in reducing bad LDL cholesterol thanks to their rich fiber content. At the same time, their rich antioxidant content shows positive health effects on cholesterol and can help prevent vessel blockage. In one study, it was reported that people who regularly consumed strawberries daily showed a 14% reduction in LDL cholesterol, a 9% reduction in total cholesterol, and a 21% reduction in triglyceride levels. The cholesterol-lowering effect of strawberries is associated with their fiber, vitamin C, and bioactive compound content. Beneficial for heart health The potassium content of strawberries can be beneficial for individuals with high blood pressure. A diet low in sodium and high in potassium is important in balancing high blood pressure. Potassium provides significant benefits in the regular functioning of the heart muscle, balancing blood pressure, and reducing the burden on the cardiovascular system. Helps protect against cancer Strawberries are among the fruits with the highest antioxidant value. Due to environmental factors such as air pollution and certain chemicals to which we are exposed during the day, some substances taken into the body can have toxic effects and lead to free radical production that causes disease. Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Ayşe Sena Binöz notes that antioxidants provide protection against free radicals and can prevent disease formation, stating: "You can support your antioxidant intake by regularly consuming one portion of strawberries daily. However, although studies show that strawberries provide protection against certain types of cancer thanks to their rich antioxidant content, more research is needed" she says. Important for blood sugar balance Studies link blood sugar imbalance disorders to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease risk. The low glycemic index of strawberries (the rate at which they raise blood sugar) is important for blood sugar balance. Especially if you have insulin resistance or diabetes problems, you can achieve more balanced blood sugar levels by consuming one portion of strawberries with one glass of kefir (200 ml) as a snack. The strawberry and kefir combination will also help you feel full for longer. Strengthens the immune system Strawberries are an important source of vitamin C, which has strong antioxidant effects. Through this, they strengthen the immune system and fight infections. One portion of strawberries (10-12 medium-sized-180 g) provides more vitamin C than one portion of orange (1 medium-sized-130 g). Extends satiety Strawberries extend the period of fullness thanks to their rich fiber content, helping with weight control. "At the same time, the low glycemic index of strawberries, that is, the rate at which they raise blood sugar, is important for blood sugar regulation," says Nutrition and Dietetics Specialist Ayşe Sena Binöz, continuing: "Studies show that low glycemic index diets have positive effects in diabetes, weight control, and obesity treatment. During your diet, you can benefit from strawberries' low energy and high water content. You can extend your satiety period by consuming strawberries with 2 whole walnuts as a snack," she said. Maintains skin health Strawberries support skin health thanks to their vitamin C and antioxidant content. They help the skin appear smoother and more radiant. Their high vitamin C content and this vitamin's anti-inflammatory effects also play a role in reducing acne-related inflammation. Prevents constipation Strawberries, which are high in fiber and water content, support the body's hydration along with other water-rich fruits such as watermelon, melon, and grapes, and help maintain regular bowel movements. Fiber can help prevent constipation by increasing bowel movements and adding bulk to stool. It is noted that people with constipation problems can increase bowel mobility by consuming one portion of fresh strawberries or strawberry jam daily.
