Magnesium Deficiency: What Are the Causes? Magnesium, the fourth most vital microelement found in the human body, plays an important role in the functioning of more than 300 enzymes. Derya Eren, Nutrition and Diet Specialist at Anadolu Health Center, noted that magnesium transmits signals both between cells and within cells, stating: "Magnesium affects many mechanisms including DNA synthesis, protein synthesis, muscle contraction, insulin mechanism, blood pressure and reproduction. This element regulates sensitivity to muscle and nerve stimulation. In this way, it calms both physically and mentally. Magnesium deficiency impairs mobility and reduces physical performance." Sharing the reasons for decreased magnesium levels in the body, Nutrition and Diet Specialist Derya Eren from Anadolu Health Center explained: "The decline in magnesium content in soil leading to insufficient magnesium in vegetables and fruits, inadequate consumption of vegetables and fruits in daily diet, increased refined carbohydrate consumption, excessive coffee consumption, insufficient absorption due to intestinal diseases, phosphate found in carbonated beverages and processed meats blocking magnesium absorption, vitamin D deficiency, diarrhea and excessive fluid loss through sweating are important causes of magnesium deficiency."
Magnesium deficiency causes fatigue, stress and migraine
Emphasizing that magnesium deficiency can lead to important problems such as chronic fatigue, cramps, stress and anxiety, migraine, diabetes, osteoporosis, concentration disorders, fibromyalgia and heart rhythm disturbances, Nutrition and Diet Specialist Derya Eren stated: "When magnesium levels in our body are sufficient, we feel more energetic. Blood sugar becomes balanced, sleep quality improves, blood pressure is regulated, migraines decrease, it helps with depression and reduces premenstrual syndrome symptoms."
