The lemon balm plant, rich in vitamins A and C, folic acid, potassium, calcium, iron, zinc, fiber and tannins, is also rich in flavonoids—plant nutrients that perform antioxidant functions in the human body. Lemon balm herb contains 42 kcal per 100 grams, and 2 calories per handful, which is 3 grams. Per 100 grams of lemon balm herb there are 5 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, 3.5 grams of protein, and 0.8 grams of fat. Additionally, per 100 grams this plant contains 667.0 IU of vitamin A, 45.0 milligrams of vitamin C, 400.0 milligrams of potassium, 150.0 milligrams of calcium, and 2.0 milligrams of iron.
Should be consumed 20 minutes before sleep
For insomnia, lemon balm tea should be consumed 20 minutes before bed. No more than 2 cups should be consumed per day. Since it is beneficial for colds, lemon balm tea is also known as a winter tea and can be consumed cold on hot summer days to refresh. After boiling half a liter of water, 1 teaspoon of lemon balm leaves is added and left to steep for 10 minutes. The teapot lid is kept closed during steeping to prevent the beneficial volatile oils from evaporating.
Should be consumed on an empty stomach
It should be consumed on an empty stomach in the morning or afternoon. This is because time and an empty stomach are important for lemon balm tea to show its full effect. Due to its relaxing effect, there may be some drawbacks to consuming it during the workday for those who work. When steeped and consumed together with St. John's wort, it is known to help with stress and insomnia problems.
