IBM's Summit, the world's fastest supercomputer, identified 77 chemicals that could stop coronavirus. This is noted as potentially an important step for a coronavirus vaccine.

At Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, United States, thousands of simulations were developed using an artificial intelligence-powered computer to analyze which drug components could prevent the virus from infecting cells.

Summit, developed for civilian scientific research by the U.S. Department of Energy, has 200 petaflops of computing power. This means the computer, which can perform 200 quadrillion calculations per second, is one million times more powerful than the world's fastest laptop. This computer previously identified cellular changes preceding Alzheimer's, analyzed genes leading to painkiller addiction, and predicted extreme weather conditions through climate simulations.

More than 8,000 simulations

Within the scope of research conducted with Summit, researcher Micholas Smith developed a model of the spike-like protrusions through which coronavirus attaches to cells, based on results of a study published in January. With this model, how atoms and particles in the viral protein react to different components was simulated. More than 8,000 simulations were conducted with components thought to be able to prevent virus spread to host cells.
