Solvay and BASF Jointly Reduce Scope 3 Emissions in Hydrogen Peroxide Production

Solvay's Linne Herten facility achieves a low-carbon supply, reducing its raw-material-related footprint by over 50%.

Low-carbon supply at Solvay's Linne Herten facility achieves over 50% reduction in raw-material sourced carbon footprint.

Solvay and BASF announced a joint initiative to significantly reduce scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions in the hydrogen peroxide supply chain. Solvay selected BASF as its primary supplier of aluminum chloride, a key input for anthraquinone production required in hydrogen peroxide manufacturing at its Linne Herten facility in the Netherlands. This choice was made due to BASF's ability to supply aluminum chloride with a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to Solvay's previous sourcing. The shift of aluminum chloride supply from India to BASF in Germany is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of this raw material by over 50%. While large-scale industrial transformation requires numerous similar initiatives, this partnership represents a concrete step toward more sustainable chemical production.

Carlos Silveira, President of Solvay Peroxides, stated: "This collaboration with BASF represents concrete progress toward achieving our sustainability targets. By prioritizing partners with more environmentally responsible practices, we are making our supply chain more efficient and reducing our emissions."

Michael Wind, Vice President of BASF Inorganic Chemicals, said: "We are committed to supporting our customers in their efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and helping them advance their markets with low-carbon products. Our LowPCF Aluminum Chloride, a low-carbon product manufactured using renewable energy instead of fossil-based energy, demonstrates our focus on developing more sustainable products to enable our customers' green transition."

Solvay's Linne Herten facility produces various basic chemicals, including chemicals used in disinfectants. A solar power plant installed at the facility in 2020 meets approximately 40% of the facility's electricity needs, resulting in approximately 17% reduction in annual CO2 emissions.

Solvay and BASF are among the participants in the "Together for Sustainability" initiative, which promotes sustainable practices in the chemical supply chain. This collaboration aligns with Solvay's overall commitment to reduce scope 3 emissions by 20% by 2030, underscoring the role of strategic sourcing in reducing the chemical industry's environmental footprint.
