Saltidin Sales Grow 20%
Saltidin Sales Rise 20 Percent
Saltigo, a subsidiary of specialty chemicals company LANXESS, set a record in sales of the active ingredient used in insect repellent products. Sales volume of Saltigo's product Saltidin increased by approximately 20 percent in 2022.
Saltidin is the trade name for Icaridin, an active ingredient found in many leading insect repellents that provides reliable protection against harmful insects such as mosquitoes and ticks. The rise in product sales was driven particularly by increasing demand in the United States and the Asia-Pacific region. Demand growth was also observed in Europe. This is attributed to exotic mosquito species appearing in the region due to climate change.
Christoph Schaffrath, Marketing and Sales Manager at Saltigo, said: "Many customers in the market are looking for an alternative to diethyltoluamide (DEET), which is also our biggest competitor."
Saltidin is produced at Saltigo's facilities in Leverkusen and Dormagen. The active ingredient is skin-friendly and suitable for use in insect repellents for sensitive groups such as allergy sufferers, pregnant women, and children.
Saltidin acts as a shield against insects and ticks by detecting odors carried by blood hosts—that is, from humans and animals. Saltidin creates a film on the skin that masks host odors. This makes it impossible for insects and ticks to recognize humans and animals as food sources.
