CERTIFIED PRODUCTS COMPLIANT WITH STANDARDS SHOULD BE PREFERRED FOR ROOFING

Statement from ÇATIDER on World Standards Day and Consumer Protection Week (Turkish Standards Week) ROOFS SHOULD USE CERTIFIED PRODUCTS IN COMPLIANCE WITH STANDARDS!

ÇATIDER, in a statement issued on the occasion of 14 October World Standards Day and Turkish Standards Week, emphasized that consumers should prefer certified, CE-marked products.

Adil Baştanoğlu, Chairman of the Board of ÇATIDER (Roof Industrialists and Businessmen Association), Noted that in Turkey, due to unregistered production and improper applications, numerous roofing failures, fires, collapses and energy losses occur every year, stating, "Turkey has millions of roofs that do not comply with standards. These roofs are at risk. Roofs must be entrusted to qualified professionals." In a statement issued by the Roof Industrialists and Businessmen Association (ÇATIDER) on the occasion of Turkish Standards Week, it was emphasized that consumers should avoid unregistered products, prefer certified, CE-marked products and have applications performed by qualified professionals. Adil Baştanoğlu, Chairman of the Board of ÇATIDER, pointed out that Turkey has millions of roofs that do not comply with standards, and said the following: "Unregistered production threatens all sectors. Non-standard products in the roofing sector cause enormous damage to both consumers and the country's economy. Roofs must be properly designed with correct details and appropriate materials in accordance with the system, and must be executed by qualified professionals. To prevent consumer money from being wasted and to ensure roofs have a long service life, roofs and applications compliant with standards should be preferred. Lack of insulation in residential and commercial roofs, failure to maintain existing insulation, failure to carry out necessary insulation improvements, and inadequate and incorrect applications in roof covering systems also damage the country's economy."

Non-qualified individuals should not be considered

Baştanoğlu, cautioning that individuals lacking authority on roof systems and covering materials provide explanations such as which roof systems should be covered with which materials, spoke as follows: "In the construction sector, since reports that discredit manufacturing and applications compliant with current regulations and specifications applicable to projects, and that could mislead people, may cause harm rather than benefit, we request that information obtained from individuals who are not expert and qualified professionals in the field of roofing should not be heeded. ÇATIDER is an impartial and reliable source on roofing and roof systems in Turkey."

Faulty roofs increase bills by 50 percent

Baştanoğlu, recalling that roofs that do not comply with standards also damage consumer budgets, stated, "These roof systems cannot provide energy efficiency. Since they are not renewed with current water and heat insulation materials, they lead to energy losses of up to 50 percent. This loss increases bills. Roof renewals are not difficult or expensive. The money spent is recovered through savings on energy, maintenance and repairs. Roofs made with correct materials and workmanship require less frequent maintenance. Roof replacement becomes unnecessary. Water infiltration, dampness and mold are eliminated, and comfort increases."

We have developed occupational standards for the roofing sector in Turkey

Baştanoğlu, expressing that ÇATIDER has carried out important work on roof standards, stated the following: "Standards in roofing must be examined under two main headings. Product standards and occupational standards for workers who will apply roofs. On the first matter, that is, for products manufactured in a registered, certified and standards-compliant manner, there are no problems. The problem in this area lies with unregistered and unmonitored products referred to as unregistered production. The fact that professional specifications for roof workers have not been prepared until today is a shortcoming. As an association, we have so far prepared three separate occupational standards: Tile-Type Roof Layer, Panel Roof Layer and Sheet-Type Roof Layer."
