Research Conducted on Adhesive Films
A clinical study lasting several months on adhesive films was conducted at Basel University Hospital in Switzerland, where the effectiveness of antimicrobially treated surfaces against hospital pathogens was examined under real-life conditions.
The research team headed by Prof. Dr. Andreas Widmer and Dr. R. Frei determined that adhesive film treated with Sanitized® achieved 98% effectiveness against microbes. The results were first published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal "Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control". The study was supported by the Swiss Innovation Agency Innosuisse.
Despite improvements in hygiene measures, hospital-acquired infections are estimated to claim the lives of 37,000 people annually in the EU and more than 98,000 people in the United States.
Additionally, significant economic losses are involved. For this reason, it is very important to research and develop the effectiveness of hygiene measures, as microbes that cause infections can survive on surfaces for hours or even months and spread from there. An emerging research area is antimicrobial coatings.
A case study headed by Prof. Dr. Andreas Widmer and Dr. R. Frei at Basel University Hospital addressed whether and how effectively Hexis S.A.S.'s antimicrobially coated plastic adhesive film works.
It acts against the cause of what is commonly known as hospital-acquired infections (HAI). In this study, the PURZON060B adhesive film commercially available from Hexis S.A.S. was used. A flexible and transparent product with a silver ion-based active ingredient supplied by SANITIZED was tested.
