WEG Introduces Innovative Coating for Offshore Use
WEG Develops Innovative Coating for Offshore Use
WEG, a global electrical and electronic equipment manufacturer operating primarily in production equipment for various sectors with electric machines, automation and paint solutions, has developed an innovative coating designed for use in highly corrosive environments.
This coating provides equipment with greater durability and increases service life by up to four times compared to existing technologies. Currently tested and applied on some offshore platforms, this coating technology replaces traditional coatings and simplifies equipment and structural maintenance in areas where it is deployed while offering significantly greater resistance compared to existing protective applications.
The first offshore maintenance projects using the new technology are currently underway, and tests are validating the performance of the new line marketed by WEG under the WrapX® brand. The development has been supported by two years of research and investments exceeding BRL 1.5 million, in addition to equipment, performance testing and technical training.
The WrapX® series comprises high-performance elastomeric coatings that increase product durability. In valve and flange maintenance operations that require continuous intervention, products can be easily removed and reapplied.
According to Rafael Guerreiro Torezan, General Manager of WEG Tintas, WrapX® "allows large application areas to be cleared within a few hours, unlike current processes where maintenance operations span several days."
"This is a sustainable technology with 100% solids content and, in addition to the oil and gas sector, can be applied in other environments where corrosion occurs at significant levels, such as mining, steel, and pulp and paper."
The application was developed with support from the Materials and Corrosion Technologies area of Petrobras' Research and Innovation Center (Cenpes), which promotes technology development by encouraging innovation and sustainability-focused initiatives.
