WEG and Nexa to develop anti-corrosion paints
A project developed by Mining Lab investigates the use of jarosite, the most-produced waste in global zinc metallurgy.
WEG has established a partnership with Nexa, one of the world's largest zinc producers, to develop liquid anticorrosive paints with jarosite, a waste material obtained from zinc metallurgy. The new solution will focus on carbon steel and cast iron surfaces and is expected to provide protective effects, reduce the use of traditional raw materials, and promote circular economy in industry. Initial results and preliminary studies show that the paint has high compatibility with epoxy, alkyd and acrylic resins and provides effective corrosion protection.
The three-year partnership between the two companies involves an investment of R$ 4 million provided by Financing and Project Studies (Finep), a public institution that promotes Science, Technology and Innovation. Through this initiative, it is aimed to develop innovative solutions by leveraging WEG's expertise in coatings and Nexa's experience in enrichment of mining and metallurgical waste.
Leveraging the anticorrosive potential of jarosite
Rafael Torezan, General Manager of WEG Coatings Business Unit, stated: "WEG promotes technological partnerships through open innovation to accelerate development and produce innovative solutions, as exemplified in this case where the development of a coating capable of utilizing the anticorrosive potential of jarosite, a mineral that emerges in the zinc enrichment process, is being investigated. This important initiative conducted with Nexa demonstrates WEG's commitment to developing innovative and sustainable solutions." The use of jarosite as a pigment emerged at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) with the support of Professor Fernando Cotting, who conducted initial tests and demonstrated the feasibility of the paint development project. With continuous jarosite supply, Nexa will reduce mineral waste levels at its Juiz de Fora unit and continue to implement the principles of circular economy, decarbonization, positive legacy, productivity and safety, which are part of the company's ESG strategy.
