Perfect Protection for All Surfaces Acrylic resins were first produced in the 1940s to meet the high UV-resistant paint requirements of the automotive industry. These developed products are divided into two groups—thermoplastic and thermoset—due to differences in their applications and chemical structures. Thermoplastic resins require no additional additives in their use and are referred to as single-component. For this reason, polymer chains do not form cross-links and are suitable for air drying. Additionally, thermoplastic resins can be softened by heat and reshaped. High methyl methacrylate content in their composition provides the product structure with high hardness and stability. For end-product purposes, thermoplastic resins can be used as varnish through the addition of solvent, and this process requires no additional reaction. Furthermore, these resins can be used as raw materials in the paint manufacturing industry due to their high characteristic properties such as UV resistance, color stability, and hardness that they impart to the final product. Thermoset resins are referred to as two-component resins due to their structure. During their use, cross-links are formed through the addition of isocyanate, and with heat assistance, these bonds within the composition increase to raise resistance levels to the highest degree. The formation of cross-links provides excellent resistance to organic solvents, moisture, and UV light. On the other hand, these resins cannot be reshaped by heat like thermoplastics. Thermoset resins achieve cross-linking through the addition of isocyanate, and these resins cannot reach a rigid structure in the absence of isocyanate. They can cure at room temperature as well as at elevated temperatures, and this process takes approximately 30 minutes. Thermoset resins can be used in different industries as protective lacquers and/or as raw materials in the paint industry through roll, brush, and spray applications. Thermoset and thermoplastic acrylic resins play a role in solving many problems in the paints and varnish industries. The advantages provided by these resins are listed below. • High UV resistance, • Clear structure and light-colored products, • High gloss, • High yellowing resistance, • High durability against external conditions, • Fast drying and curing, • High scratch resistance despite silky surface, • Easy removal of spots and roughness on the surface, • High resistance to water, dirt, and wear. Acrylic resins demonstrate high durability against all external factors. Additionally, they provide perfect protection for all surfaces. Due to these high properties, they have a wide variety of applications including road marking paints, metal and galvanized surface coatings, decorative coatings, topcoat industrial paints and varnishes, exterior facade applications, and automotive paints and varnishes.
