Clean and Spotless Finishing Birchwood® Technologies Introduces Tru Temp® Stainless Black Oxide for Clean and Spotless Finishing. The new TRU TEMP® Stainless Black Oxide finishing process is used as part of a two-stage chemical reaction that begins with an activation step using a diluted muriatic acid solution. The stainless steel surface is then oxidized to create a uniform black coating that can be sealed with an appropriate rust inhibitor topcoat for optimal appearance and corrosion resistance. TRU TEMP® Stainless Black Oxide for stainless steel creates a black magnetite coating when applied to stainless steel parts and is effective for finishing 200, 300, 400 and 17-4 pH stainless steel grades. TRU TEMP® produces a protective black coating 0.000020" (1 micron) thick with an attractive satin black appearance equal to hot black oxide, while operating at significantly lower temperatures than conventional hot black oxide, which runs at 250-260°F, TRU TEMP® Stainless operates effectively at 200° to 210°F. Moreover, TRU TEMP® Stainless uses zero chromium in its formulation, unlike other competing stainless surface finishing products. Additionally, TRU TEMP® Stainless uses 30-40% less caustic content compared to other finishing processes, making TRU TEMP® a more user-friendly and environmentally friendly finishing option. Parts finishing is rapid and completes blackening in under an hour using a seven-stage process that includes cleaning, rinsing, activation, rinsing, blackening, rinsing and sealing in the most common finishing line configuration. Alternative process designs for most workflows can be employed using specialized or automated finishing systems.
