Cellulose Ethers and Their Applications
Cellulose Ethers and Applications
As production volumes in the construction sector continue to grow, the raw materials used also vary according to their performance characteristics. Among the products most consumed in the paints and building chemicals market, cellulose ethers rank at the top.
Cellulose ether raw material is high-purity cellulose and is produced from cotton linters and paper pulp depending on viscosity. Because its primary source is wood, it is a naturally derived, environmentally friendly polymer.
Through a special process called etherification, specialized cellulose ethers such as methyl cellulose (MC), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), and methylhydroxypropyl cellulose (MHPC) are produced. These specialized forms have diverse applications in building materials, paints and coatings, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and cleaning products.
Its main characteristic is its ability to retain water within its structure, and in the construction sector it is used to provide and enhance binding properties, ease of application, and water retention in products. While cellulose is insoluble in water, the chemically synthesized cellulose ethers shown below are soluble in water.
Cellulose ethers become ready for use in multiple forms and properties. Particularly depending on production processes, cellulose ethers can be examined in different groups. Accordingly:
• Methyl cellulose (MC),
• Hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC),
• Hydroxyethyl methyl cellulose (HEMC),
• Hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC).
Huacell products are used in many end-product applications and impart the following properties to the system:
• Thickening (by increasing viscosity),
• Water retention,
• Shear strength,
• Positive effect on adhesion,
• Binding effect,
• Assistance in film formation,
• Ease of application,
• Reduction of surface tension.
Areas of application include building products, water-based paints, personal care, cosmetics, household and cleaning products, emulsion polymerization, pharmaceuticals, and other applications. In water-based paints (interior, exterior, ceiling, etc.), by adjusting rheology, they provide thickening, ease of application, and anti-drip, sag, or splash effects. They also have binding and open-time extension properties.
Huacell in different viscosity varieties contributes to the production of plaster and building chemicals by improving rheological properties such as spreadability and non-splashing, storage stability, open-time application window, coverage, and film-formation characteristics, and by retaining water within the matrix for extended periods, ensures good surface adhesion and prevents cracking. Another application area for the construction sector involves building chemicals products.
Our Huacell 20 MP-Huacell 60 MP products, in different viscosity ranges and modification degrees, are used in cement-based plasters, tile/ceramic adhesives, decorative plasters, waterproofing products, exterior thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS), and self-leveling screed products, gypsum-based products, and generally impart the following properties to the system:
HUACELL 20 MP

Gypsum is another binder for building products, and because it is not as resistant to water as cement, it is more commonly preferred for interior applications. Our Huacell GMC 30-Huacell GMC 40 products, applied to building products such as gypsum-based hand plaster, machine plaster, joint filler, adhesives, and repair mortars, retain water within the matrix for extended periods, providing ease of workability and optimal consistency while preventing clumping. For gypsum-based products, the recommended Huacell system generally imparts the following properties: HUACELL GMC 30 A nonionic, water-soluble cellulose ether. Tasteless, odorless, and available in fine powder form. Application Areas: • Gypsum-based mortars, • Decorative finish plaster-mortar. Performance Properties: • Rapid thickening effect, • High water retention, • Excellent anti-sag effect, • Easy pumping and spreading, • Smoothing and leveling ease, • Early strength and hardness.Dosage Compatibility Total Dry Mixed Mortar: 0.02 - 0.6%
