Industrialists Turn to Energy-Efficient Heating Systems

In pursuit of lower energy costs, manufacturers looking for new heating-system solutions—which account for a significant share of operating expenses—have turned to radiant heating systems that deliver savings of up to 60% in plant operations, with advantages in installation time and initial capital investment. The global energy crisis has also struck Turkish industry. Over the past year, electricity and natural gas bills have risen by as much as 300%. Manufacturers seeking new solutions to reduce energy costs have focused on heating systems, which represent a substantial portion of energy expenditure. Many manufacturers have switched to radiant heating systems, which provide savings of up to 60% in heating operations and offer advantages in ease of installation and initial investment costs.

Renovation projects up 25%

Commenting on the growing demand for renovation projects in manufacturing due to rising energy costs, Çukurova Isı Marketing Director Osman Ünlü said, "Manufacturers wanting to keep their costs under control have begun searching for alternative heating-system solutions. Following increased demand, heating-system renovation projects in manufacturing during the first quarter of the year showed a 25% increase compared to the previous year. Manufacturers have turned to radiant heating systems that deliver savings of up to 60% in plant operations while offering advantages in installation time and cost."

Savings reaching up to 60%

Ünlü also highlighted the advantages radiant heating systems offer in terms of operating expenses in manufacturing: "With radiant heating systems, heat loss from transfer elements does not occur. Additionally, radiant heaters warm specific zones within a space. Unlike conventional systems that aim to heat the air in the environment, savings in operating expenses compared to conventional systems can reach up to 60%, depending on factors such as building height and insulation condition. Due to low operating costs, the investment pays for itself in as little as 1 to 3 years.

"The facility's daily water consumption has decreased by 120 tons, and electricity consumption has fallen by 95%"

Ünlü further explained the advantages radiant heating systems offer in manufacturing through a reference project: "According to a report from one of our customers, a leading manufacturer in the rail-systems sector, detailing the benefits achieved after converting from steam heating to radiant heating: In cold weather, while the ambient temperature with the steam heating system operated at 10-13 degrees, it reached 17 degrees with radiant heating systems. Additionally, through radiation, materials in the production area became heated, and the situation where workers crowded under blowers due to cold has been eliminated. This has also improved worker performance. The facility's hourly natural gas consumption decreased from 615 cubic meters to 415 cubic meters. The facility's hourly natural gas consumption fell by 32%. Radiant heating systems providing the required comfort conditions while operating for 7 hours instead of 12 hours daily achieved daily energy savings at the 60% level. With radiant heating requiring no water, the facility's daily water consumption decreased by 120 tons and electricity consumption fell by 95%," he said.

Initial investment 30% more economical

Noting that radiant heating systems were installed in a 10,000-square-meter factory within one week, Ünlü also emphasized the advantages the system offers in terms of initial investment costs: "The initial investment cost of radiant heating systems is 30% lower than conventional systems. This is because heating in radiant systems is not done through convection as in conventional systems. Heating occurs through radiation. The system is installed in the space to be heated and suspended from the ceiling. Gas burned through a burner circulates within radiant tubes, and the energy radiating from the heated tube is directed downward by reflectors to provide heating. For this reason, radiant heating systems do not require transfer elements such as boilers, circulation pumps, fans, pipes/ducts, fittings, convectors, or diffusers as found in conventional systems," he concluded.
