Additive Technology in Colorant Systems and Cost Reduction Methods
Abstract
Continuously evolving environmental regulations, cost reduction pressures and demands for superior performance are the primary parameters in the development of the coatings sector. Capturing market success depends on the ability to react quickly to developing market demands such as implementing new alternative binder systems or finding alternative products in the face of raw material shortages. Production flexibility will only become more possible through the use of in-plant tinting systems.
Color systems obtained using Patcham dispersion technology are part of this process. The absence of lot-to-lot variation and provision of long-term stability are the preferred reasons. In this article, we will provide technical information on the formulation of color systems in non-water-based industrial coatings. Through this colorant system (paste system), products will be produced for a wide range of applications. Pastes compatible with many different resins, pigments and solvents with or without aromatics can be produced.
Introduction
Due to demands and regulations aimed at reducing VOC in solvent and binder usage, many manufacturers today have been forced to update their formulations regardless of rising formula costs.
In addition to increases in raw material prices, production issues that may be encountered in low VOC and low aromatic content formulations such as high mill-base viscosity, limited resin solubility, low wetting properties of aromatic-free solvents and stability conditions can also be challenging.
Updates to the additives provided in ready-made paint formulations need to be made, or alternatively, it would be more appropriate to implement a system with pigment pastes or colorants.
Pat-Add DA 3054 dispersing agent is a recommended product for formulating concentrate pastes suitable for low VOC content paints and for producing pigment pastes used in the manufacture of protective coatings for sectors such as general industry and automotive.
The most impactful development in the coloring process is well-designed polymeric dispersing agents that enable the formulation of high pigment content pastes that provide in-plant use in all types of coatings.
Pigment Dispersions and Additives
The use of a dispersing agent that can be dissolved in appropriate solvents and is compatible with a wide range of resins forms the basis of pigment paste. Pigments are dispersed and stabilized in this medium and added by volume or weight into transparent or white paint. The most important condition for successful use is creating strong pigment flocculation stability when the pigment paste is added to the paint at any ratio. These conditions are only possible with high molar volume (HMV) dispersion technology (e.g., Pat-Add DA 3054). Adsorbed dispersing agent molecules form a protective layer and thereby prevent pigment particles from reagglomerating. Higher adsorption layer volume means a stronger stabilization layer is created, i.e., approximately 25% greater thickness compared to a classical polymer. Higher volume contributes to better dispersion stability while reducing the risk of reagglomeration.
