Quintus Technologies Launches Vehicle Box

Quintus Technologies Launches Purus® Toolbox for Vehicle Boxes Quintus Technologies has developed a toolbox in response to requests from advanced component manufacturers such as medical implant, turbine blade and rocket engine nozzle producers, which enables the achievement of non-oxidized component surfaces following Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP), while eliminating difficult, costly and hazardous pre- and post-processing steps. Peter Henning, Marketing and Sales Director at Quintus Technologies, said, "Oxidized component surfaces and particularly alpha-cased titanium components - an oxygen-enriched brittle surface layer that forms on titanium alloys during high-temperature processes - are prone to cracking and therefore compromise component strength and safety during operation. The oxygen causing oxidation during the process comes from various sources that must be controlled to ensure component performance. The oxidation issue is currently addressed (where possible) by manually wrapping all individual components in metal foil before processing, or by removing all oxidized surfaces after processing using pickling or chemical erosion." Most of these problems can be prevented or significantly reduced using the Quintus Purus toolbox, which consists of advanced application expertise in HIP processing, new HIP equipment hardware and software features, and specialized oxygen-getter cassettes. This not only provides design advantages but also significantly reduces the cost and environmental impact of manufactured components. As additive manufacturing (AM) continues to expand the possibilities for designing and constructing increasingly complex, functional structures, issues related to oxidized complex surface structures and difficult-to-monitor locations are attracting greater attention. Complex structure examples include trabecular structures designed for bone ingress in cementless medical implants, and narrow environmental channels used for cooling and fuel transport in high-temperature jet engines and space propulsion. The concept underlying Purus was developed, tested and refined over several years at Quintus Application Centers in Västerås, Sweden and Columbus, Ohio, USA, and was subsequently validated in beta testing by select business partners whose functionality demands supported business opportunities. Since beta testing demonstrated that superior results could be achieved, the Quintus Purus toolbox can now be used as a retrofit in an existing Compact HIP system or offered as part of a new system. Jan Söderström, CEO and President of Quintus Technologies, said, "Purus enables the production of complex surfaces 'ready to use' directly from HIP processing without having to manually wrap each component in metal foil or remove oxidized surfaces after processing through mechanical or chemical erosion. This reduces energy consumption, manufacturing costs and the need for hazardous chemicals.
