Organic coatings paints sector has become a widely used method in recent times. In this article, we have compiled what organic coatings mean, types of organic coatings and production methods. Organic coatings can be defined as coating materials whose backbone is formed by organic polymer, monomer or oligomer-based binders. At the same time, organic coatings are coatings or paints that contain organic elements such as Carbon (-C), Hydrogen (-H), or Oxygen (-O) in their molecular structure or chemical bonds of these elements, and are generally in liquid form. Organic coatings encompass both thermoplastic and thermoset coatings and paints. Architectural paints, solvent-based or petroleum-derived paints, elastomeric polymeric coatings, industrial liquid paints and coatings, powder coatings, toxic marine paints, reinforced plastics and primers are listed as types of organic coatings. What are the application areas of organic coatings? The application areas of organic coatings are very broad because they can be produced in many different types. Construction sector, automotive sector, industrial field, maritime, and offshore are among the areas where organic coatings are used. Beyond these, application areas depend on characteristics such as the structure of the surface to be applied and external factors.

How are organic coatings applied?

Applying organic coatings may require some special equipment and defects may occur during application. To prevent these, the properties of the organic coating used in the application, drying and curing processes must be well understood. Each coating has different environmental conditions, humidity levels, pressure and flow rate equipment settings suitable for it. At the same time, the structure of organic coatings and the characteristics of the applied surface determine its lifespan. Surface preparation is one of the most important factors; it can shorten or extend the lifespan of organic coatings. For example; if the painted surface is covered with oxide layers remaining from hot rolling, the paint lifespan is approximately 5 years. Surface cleanliness changes this period. The surface to be applied; if cleaned manually using a brush, 6 years; if cleaned chemically, 8 years; if cleaned and roughened by sandblasting technique, 11 years is considered.   Source
