Proposed International Standard ASTM Provides Coating Wettability Test
This ASTM International standard provides easier handling for using portable goniometers to measure liquid droplet contact angles when applied to a surface to test the wettability of coatings, substrates and pigments. ASTM's paints and coatings, materials and application committee (D01) is developing the proposed standard (WK72334).
Lucas Dillingham, ASTM International Member at BTG Labs, said: "The ability to bridge the gap between the research and test laboratory and the production line affects almost every sector. Surface preparation for adhesion can be examined reliably, accurately, quantitatively and non-destructively. Performing these tests directly on real parts in a production process means that preliminary laboratory work can be more efficient."
According to Dillingham, the proposed standard offers advantages. It will enable wettability testing to be performed quickly and repeatedly on real parts or actual production lines to prevent failures.
For example, Frederick Fiddler, ASTM International Member and Technical Director at KRÜSS USA, noted that when contact angle measurements need to be taken in a factory or production facility on a large part, the new method would involve the use of a portable goniometer. Measurements can be taken instead of dismantling the part for laboratory testing.
The proposed standard will be beneficial for manufacturers involved in adhesion, coating, printing, painting, sealing or cleaning. Manufacturers can use it to control their supply chains by implementing incoming material surface quality controls. Organizations consider the proposed standard important in ensuring consistency of cleaning methods to create ideal surfaces for adhesion.
