Omyamatt®: New Modified Calcium Carbonate-Based Matting Agent for Water-Based Emulsion Paints

Next-generation modified calcium carbonates (MCC) provide highly effective matting properties. The highly optimized design of particle shape and surface structure, combined with controlled particle distribution and broad specific surface area, makes Omyamatt a powerful and efficient alternative to conventional matting agents. The unique "golf ball" shaped particle structure consists of a natural, high-purity calcium carbonate core and a hydroxyapatite (calcium phosphate hydroxide) shell that provides functional surface properties. Omyamatt can be used as a replacement for alternative matting agents. If formulating from scratch, it is an excellent choice. For best results, it is recommended to add it at the end of the dispersion phase (mill-base) or with reduced shear force.

Omyamatt has a 30% lower carbon footprint compared to flux-calcined diatomite matting agents and 36% lower compared to crushed, expanded perlite.   Matting agents generally have a significant impact on film surface roughness properties. Large particles improve matting characteristics, but if the maximum particle size is too high, it can lead to undesirable roughness.
