The Importance of Thermal Insulation in Combating Climate Crisis
Buildings account for 40 percent of global carbon emissions worldwide. 80 percent of these emissions stem from energy spent on heating and cooling. Tayfun Küçükoğlu, General Director of Betek Boya, emphasizes that the strongest fight against global warming can be waged through thermal insulation and raising awareness on this matter. The climate crisis caused by global warming is escalating. The Earth's surface temperature has risen 1.2 degrees from the pre-Industrial Revolution era to today. The World Meteorological Organization predicts that if warming continues, temperatures could rise 2-5 degrees by the end of this century. Should warming exceed 2 degrees compared to pre-Industrial Revolution levels, 1 billion people are expected to be affected by lethal heat and humidity.
Most recently, at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference held in Glasgow, Scotland with the participation of 197 countries, all nations signed a series of agreements to keep surface temperature at 1.5 degrees. The EU and USA announced a global partnership to reduce methane greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. More than 100 country leaders pledged to stop and reverse deforestation.
For the future of our world, all countries are expected to take coordinated steps to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees by keeping it below 2 degrees. Noting that the vital targets set for our world and the determination demonstrated are satisfactory, Betek Boya General Director Tayfun Küçükoğlu continued his remarks as follows: "To ensure success, carbon emissions must be reduced by 55 percent from 1990 levels by 2030, and limited and problematic energy sources must be used in the most correct and efficient manner possible," he said.
Global Building Stock to Double
One of the most important methods in the fight against global warming undertaken by the entire world is external facade thermal insulation. Today, buildings account for 40 percent of global carbon emissions worldwide. 80 percent of these emissions stem from energy spent on heating and cooling. According to experts, the existing global building stock is expected to double by 2050, when many economies have committed to carbon neutrality. The most concerning figure is that 90 percent of existing buildings will still exist in 2050. Pointing out that countries must make progress in thermal insulation while trying to prevent the climate crisis, Küçükoğlu said, "Both new buildings must be protected with advanced thermal insulation care and existing building stocks must have their thermal insulation and energy efficiency improved."
Thermal Insulation: The Most Important Element in the Fight
Betek Boya General Director Tayfun Küçükoğlu points out that the strongest fight to prevent global warming can be waged in the field of thermal insulation. Recalling the United Nations statement that despite all country commitments, global temperature could rise an average of 2.7 degrees within this century, Küçükoğlu said: "We know that 40 percent of carbon emissions come from buildings.At this point, it becomes essential to conduct more comprehensive and supportive work on thermal insulation. Products and services in all areas that consume less energy and consequently produce less carbon, such as better insulated buildings and more efficient energy systems, must be supported. Thermal insulation is our most important shield in combating the global warming and climate crisis threat awaiting our world," he said.
"80 Percent of Buildings Lack Thermal Insulation" Expressing that they feel significant responsibility on this matter as an insulation sector company under the Dalmaçyalı brand, Küçükoğlu continued his remarks: "Leaving a habitable world for future generations, ensuring energy efficiency and achieving healthy living spaces are matters of vital importance, and we view thermal insulation as a national issue. In recent years, Turkey has made significant progress on this matter, but we still have much further to go. 80 percent of the approximately 25 million buildings in our country lack thermal insulation. By providing thermal insulation for both existing non-insulated buildings and newly constructed buildings, we can save at least 30 to 40 percent of energy and thereby reduce carbon emissions proportionally. Speaking in numbers, in our country where energy costs approach 60 billion dollars, savings achieved through thermal insulation work could reach 9 billion dollars. This amount of savings has critical importance for climate protection," he said.
