Grey Continues to Gain Popularity Worldwide
According to a report prepared by Axalta, grey continues to gain popularity in mobility markets worldwide. White remains the most popular vehicle color but is declining in major markets. Blue-toned shades increased by 1% since last year.
Axalta, a leading global supplier of liquid and powder coatings, released its 69th annual Global Automotive Color Popularity Report, showing that most vehicles on roads today are white (35%), black (19%) and grey (19%). Grey color increased by four percent globally.
The results of Axalta's Global Automotive Color Popularity Report were tabulated based on Axalta's analysis of 2021 automotive production data from major markets and serve as an indicator of current market trends. Since 2011, white has been the most common vehicle color worldwide, with Asia leading in white vehicle production. Overall, white's popularity reached its highest level at 39% in 2017, but has seen declines in various regions each year since then.
This year, white declined across all regions, particularly in China at 7%, declining by three percentage points overall. Europe, for the third consecutive year, reported grey as the most popular color at 27%, making it the only major region to do so. In South America, the most popular color is silver, ranking second with 23% usage. Black is most prevalent at 22% in Europe and continues to lead in the luxury segment. North America has the highest percentage of new red vehicles on roads at 8%. This year, the automotive market faced challenges due to the semiconductor chip shortage affecting automotive production.
Nancy Lockhart, Axalta's global color product manager, stated: "Consumer demand is expected to indicate trends in upcoming automotive color popularity." Axalta began reporting on paint color in the industry in 1953 and continues to report on color trends and color preferences. Additionally, color forecasts are reported in Axalta's global annual color trend forecast. The future landscape of automotive color continues to evolve as vehicle and consumer preferences develop. Axalta designs conceptual colors that are both aesthetically and functionally beneficial to vehicle surfaces.
