Covestro Leads the Way in Renewable Energy Procurement
Covestro is expanding its range of circular raw materials and now offers customers in various regions renewable toluene diisocyanate (TDI) that delivers significant reductions in CO2 footprint from the outset to the factory gate compared to fossil-based products while maintaining the same high quality.
TDI is a key raw material for flexible polyurethane foam, providing high levels of comfort in car seats and footwear, as well as in mattresses and upholstered furniture. Covestro produces renewable TDI using the mass balance method at both its Dormagen site in Germany and its Caojing site in China. Both sites are certified according to the ISCC PLUS standard.
As outlined by Dr. Klaus Schäfer, Chief Technology Officer at Covestro, offering renewable TDI through mass balance is the next step in making this important chemical raw material even more sustainable. Schäfer stated: "Already years ago, our unique gas-phase technology was a milestone toward greater energy efficiency in TDI production. Subsequently, we committed to achieving further reductions in emissions from our production by switching to green electricity.
This additional improvement clearly demonstrates how consistently we are following our path toward climate neutrality and a circular economy: by using mass-balanced renewable raw materials, we are now seeking to significantly reduce our indirect emissions in the supply chain and offer products with a lower carbon footprint."
Sucheta Govil, Chief Commercial Officer at Covestro, said: "With our transition to mass-balanced products, we are helping customers across various sectors achieve their climate targets and drive the shift toward a circular economy. At the same time, we are strengthening the use of alternative raw materials and reducing CO2 emissions across various value chains." Customers can use this TDI as a ready-to-use solution, meaning it can be quickly and easily implemented in existing production processes without requiring technical modifications.
