Akdeniz Chemson to Produce 3,000 Tons of Zinc Borate Annually

Akdeniz Chemson commissions new zinc borate facility Akdeniz Chemson, the world market leader in PVC stabilizers operating under the OYAK umbrella, has commissioned the first phase of its zinc borate production facility in Izmir with an annual capacity of 3,000 tonnes. With the new facility coming online, Akdeniz Chemson takes its place among the world's leading flame-retardant chemical manufacturers, and will complete the parallel capacity increase in zinc oxide—one of the key raw materials for zinc borate production—this month. Akdeniz Chemson, an OYAK company, continues its investments without slowing down following the merger in October 2020. Akdeniz Chemson has commissioned the first phase of its new facility in Izmir, aiming to produce 3,000 tonnes of zinc borate annually. With the start of production of this inorganic additive possessing flame-retardant and smoke-suppressing properties, Akdeniz Chemson has become one of the world's leading flame-retardant chemical manufacturers. Upon completion of the investment's second phase, the company will produce an additional 6,000 tonnes of zinc borate annually on top of current production capacity. The company will also complete the parallel capacity increase in zinc oxide, one of the key raw materials for this product, this month.

Managing its own R&D process for specialty chemical production

In line with its vision to become a global chemistry portfolio company, Akdeniz Chemson operates its own R&D process for high-value-added chemical production. For this purpose, it began initial zinc borate production with Akdeniz Kimya in 2018. To meet the needs of a rapidly developing market, Akdeniz Chemson has commissioned the first phase of its new facility in Izmir and carries out product development, production design, and process technology design for zinc borate in its own R&D and Engineering departments.  

Used against high temperatures

Zinc borate, which has flame-retardant and smoke-suppressing properties, is used especially in the production of flame-resistant products. Found in polymers and coatings particularly in PVC, nylon and halogenated polyester, zinc borate is utilized in high-temperature-resistant plastics, flame-resistant cables and fabrics, electrical-electronic components, paints, automotive and aircraft interior parts, and in the paper and textile industries.
