Siemens Enhances Safety of Tank Terminals with Digital Solutions

We conducted an interview with Siemens Software Global Product Director Sidney Swart and Siemens Software Global Process Simulate Product Director Bert Beker, in which we obtained detailed information about the transformations that digitalization and energy transition are creating in the sector and about Siemens' work in this field.

Siemens' Global Center of Competence for Tank Terminals prioritizes process safety through Tank Management Systems (TMS), enhancing security compliance via real-time data, incident management and automated maintenance. In doing so, terminals prepare for energy transition, including the handling of new energy types such as hydrogen, while minimizing risks and meeting regulatory standards.

We would like to know you better; could you please provide us with information about your educational background and professional career?

I am Sidney Swart, with over 20 years of experience in the Operational Technology industry and particularly serving customers in the Tank Terminal Sector. I have obtained both Chemistry and Technology education and am Siemens Software Global Product Director.

I am Bert Beker; with 25 years of experience with major ICT global system integrators, I am Siemens Software Global Process Simulate Product Director. We can bridge the need for integrating operational technology environments and ICT platforms at our customers.

Siemens is an established company operating across a very wide geography. Could you tell us about Siemens' founding and development history? How long has Siemens been operating in Turkey?

You are correct; Siemens has maintained its presence in Turkey for 168 years. Focused on qualified digital transformation, we continue our 168-year technology legacy in this region through technology and engineering contributions, and with 2 factories, R&D centers and over 5,000 employees, we are very pleased to be here, contributing to Turkish industry through production and sustainability approaches. Our Siemens Digital Industries Software team has been continuing its work with our subsidiary established for 2 years.

Can you provide us with more information about the Global Center of Competence for Tank Terminals?

The Global Center of Competence for Tank Terminals (GCoC) was established in 2020 in the Netherlands and is part of Siemens' Digital Industry Division. Our mission is to assist customers in the independent tank terminal sector in their digitalization journeys and in their roles in energy transition. This includes consulting projects as well as the implementation of Terminal Management Systems to be prepared for the future.

Do You Have a Presence in Turkey to Serve This Market?

Siemens has maintained a presence in Turkey for decades and has offices in Istanbul. Building from the Global Center of Competence, we support our local Turkish colleagues in serving customers in this country. You can reach us via our email address.

What are the future challenges for tank terminals?

First and foremost, energy transition taking place on a global scale. What is the position and role of the independent tank terminal and how should the organization prepare for storing new forms of energy such as hydrogen? These changes affect daily operations and impact infrastructure and information systems.

What is a Tank Management System (TMS)?

A TMS is a software solution designed to manage and optimize a tank terminal's operations. It simplifies terminal operations by integrating various functions such as inventory management, order processing, planning and security compliance.

How can TMS increase operational efficiency?

A Tank Management System automates many manual processes, reducing the time and effort required to manage terminal operations. It provides real-time data and analytics for better decision-making and more efficient resource allocation.

What is the impact of TMS on safety and compliance?

A TMS ensures compliance with industry regulations and safety standards by providing monitoring and reporting tools. It can track safety incidents, manage maintenance schedules and ensure that all safety protocols are enforced.

How does TMS improve inventory management?

A TMS provides real-time inventory level visibility to help prevent stock shortages and overstocking situations. It can track product movements, manage storage conditions and optimize inventory turnover.

Can TMS enhance customer satisfaction?

Yes, a TMS can enhance customer satisfaction by providing accurate and timely information about order status, delivery schedules and inventory availability. This transparency helps build trust and improve customer relationships.

What are the cost advantages of implementing TMS?

Implementing a TMS can generate significant cost savings by reducing manual labor, minimizing errors, optimizing resource utilization and improving inventory management. These efficiencies can result in lower operational costs and higher profitability.

How does TMS support scalability and growth?

A TMS is designed to support a terminal's growth by providing scalable solutions that can handle increasing volumes and complexity. It can be easily integrated with other systems and adapted to changing business needs.

What role does TMS play in data management and analytics?

A TMS collects and analyzes data from various terminal operations to provide valuable insights on performance, trends and areas for improvement. This data-driven approach enables better strategic planning and decision-making.

How can TMS improve communication and collaboration?

A TMS facilitates better communication and collaboration between different departments and stakeholders by providing a central platform for information sharing. This improves coordination and reduces communication errors.

What are the long-term benefits of investing in TMS?

Long-term benefits of investing in a TMS include sustained operational efficiency, enhanced safety and compliance, increased customer satisfaction and the ability to scale and adapt to future business needs. These benefits contribute to the terminal's overall success and competitive strength.
