Boytek Reçine Chairman İsmail Darcan: An Engaging InterviewWe conducted an enjoyable conversation with İsmail Darcan, Chairman of the Board of Boytek Reçine, which has been operating since 1978. İsmail Darcan shared valuable information about Boytek Reçine with us.

Could you tell us about yourself and your professional background?

Boytek Reçine, founded by the Darcan family, began manufacturing operations in January 1978 in Yenibosna, Istanbul, producing Alkyd and Polyester Resins. I was born in Gazioğlu village, attached to the center of Tekirdağ. I attended primary school in a two-classroom village school and middle school at Tekirdağ Namık Kemal High School. During my high school years, with the ambition of becoming a chemical engineer, I graduated from Yıldız Technical University's Galatasaray Chemical Engineering department.

Could you share Boytek's founding story and the sectors it serves today?

After completing my education, I finished my Master's degree in Polymer Science and founded Boytek in Yenibosna to begin manufacturing. As Boytek, we serve the Pipe, Maritime, Energy, Aviation, Construction, Automotive, and Tourism sectors. Our company principle is continuity with patience and faith, and with care. "If there is work in these sectors today, let me produce it; if there is profit in other sectors tomorrow," this approach creates imbalances between sectors. Our other principle—being responsive to environmental developments and combining this with our technical knowledge and culture to make decisions in light of these parameters—always brings us together with what is right and good. Boytek's 46-year history exists thanks to our team that loves management and production very much. For this reason, the policies that Boytek has maintained so far are based on continuity. What products do you offer to the composites sector, and could you tell us about the work you are conducting in your R&D Laboratory to develop these products?

The Boytek product portfolio has been developed entirely through our company's own R&D work and included in our portfolio. Our company is among the world's leading firms in product variety, active R&D activities, and customer satisfaction. In our product distribution, we have all types of polyester resins, gelcoats, pigment pastes, vinyl esters, mold release agents, peroxides, and agency representations of auxiliary materials from world-renowned companies such as Owens Corning, Nouryon, and Ineos that complete our portfolio. Boytek Reçine's raw material sourcing sources are principled, consistent firms with limited manufacturers. Boytek Reçine is a top-tier manufacturer with production technology, production capacity, machinery, and experienced personnel.

Could you share your export activities and the regions to which you primarily export?

We have a total production capacity of 85,000 tons across two locations in Europe and Asia. With the richness of our product portfolio and our quality understanding, as a company that has been exporting since 1986, we continue to sell products on five continents with our policy of growing together with customers and emphasizing continuity. What sustainability work are you conducting at Boytek given the climate crisis we face and the depletion of resources pushing sectors to take steps toward sustainability? Life in our world is only possible through balance and achieving this balance. I and we (the Boytek Team) are people who are aware that cycles must exist. In this regard, in 2018, we made a groundbreaking investment in our Tuzla facility with a 179 kW capacity roof solar power plant project and we reduce our carbon emissions by generating 15% of our factory's electricity. We continue such investments, and we will source all our energy consumption from green energy. Additionally, since 1997, we have continued to produce resins manufactured from recycled materials (waste PET) bottles. We have implemented zero-waste certificates in our facility years ago and continue to handle sustainability with care together with all our employees.

When you compare the development of Turkey's composites sector with the world, how do you evaluate it, and what steps do you believe should be taken for the sector's development?

The growth trends of the composites sector continue year after year with increases in domestic consumption and foreign exports. We, as sector players who produce and supply composite materials to the market, must always prioritize quality understanding.
