Boron Element and Its Importance in the Cosmetics Sector

Boron (B) is a metalloid element with atomic number 5 in the periodic table and does not occur in nature in its pure form; it exists in the form of compounds such as borates, boric acid and boron nitride. Although boron itself is not used directly in cosmetics, boron compounds—particularly formulation additives such as boron nitride (BN)—are of growing importance in modern cosmetic products.

1. Introduction
Boron (B) is a metalloid element with atomic number 5 in the periodic table and does not occur naturally in pure form; it is found in compounds such as borates, boric acid and boron nitride. While boron itself is not used directly in cosmetics, boron compounds, particularly formulation additives such as boron nitride (BN), have increasing importance in modern cosmetic products.

2. Applications of Boron Compounds in Cosmetic Products
2.1. Boron Nitride (BN) and Functional Role
Boron nitride is a boron compound frequently used in the cosmetics sector and is preferred for the following functional characteristics:
• Slip and texture enhancement: Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) provides high slip and smooth application in makeup products. This characteristic improves user experience in products such as foundation, powder and blush.
• Light diffusion and optical effects: Boron nitride creates a soft-focus effect on the skin through its light reflection and scattering capacity, reducing the appearance of fine lines and pores.
• Oil control and matte finish: BN provides oil control in formulations, enabling the development of more matte-finish products, particularly for oily and combination skin types.
• Wide range of applications: Formulations containing BN are widely found in product groups such as eyeshadow, face powders, foundations, primers and sunscreens.
• Dispersion and stability: h-BN particles support homogeneous distribution of product components, contributing to formula stability.
These functional contributions demonstrate the technical importance of boron compounds in cosmetic formulations.

2.2. Applications of Boron Nitride
Boron nitride is used as a versatile additive in the cosmetic product range. Primary applications can be summarized as follows:
• Colour cosmetics: In makeup products such as foundations, compact and loose powders, eyeshadows, blushes and concealers, h-BN provides smooth application, superior coverage and a pleasant feel.
• Skincare: In sunscreens, moisturizers and anti-aging products, BN enhances product performance by creating textures more compatible with the skin and helps maintain oil-water balance.
• Eye and lip products: In eyeliner, lip liner and lipstick, BN's spreadability and color efficiency provide more homogeneous and comfortable use.
These versatile applications highlight the strategic importance of boron in cosmetic product development processes.

3. Safety Assessment of Boron Nitride
The safety of boron nitride in cosmetic products has been scientifically evaluated. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) expert panel reported that boron nitride is used as a slip agent and is safe at current usage levels. The highest reported usage rate can reach 25% in eye products. This assessment demonstrates that boron compounds can be used in formulations under appropriate conditions in terms of both technical performance and consumer safety.

4. Industry Perspective—Innovation and Market Trends
In recent years, h-BN use has not been limited to classical cosmetic products but has expanded into hybrid products (BB creams, serum-foundations) and high-performance skincare products. This trend is an important indicator that formulation trends in the sector are moving toward "multi-functional, high sensorial property products." Additionally, high-purity boron compounds and nano-scale production techniques enable manufacturers to develop more competitive and innovative products.

5. Conclusion
Although boron itself is not used directly in the cosmetics sector, boron compounds, particularly hexagonal boron nitride, have become an indispensable component of modern cosmetic formulations. These compounds, which enhance product performance, improve user experience and support safe use, have a wide range of applications in both colour cosmetic products and skincare products. In today's era of increasingly sophisticated cosmetic formulations, boron compounds are solidifying their position in the sector as a powerful building block for innovation.
