New High Impact Resistance Insulation System: Baumit Power System

Baumit Power System is a newly developed thermal insulation system with high impact resistance designed to withstand demanding weather conditions. Research conducted in Europe shows that damage to building envelopes due to weather conditions has increased 15-fold over the last 30 years.
Hail risk maps are being drawn up in many European countries to identify areas at risk of high damage. This work demonstrates that external facade thermal insulation systems must now have high impact resistance.
Building on this data, Baumit aims to produce facades with high durability against extreme weather conditions through its Power System. As a consequence of global warming, sudden temperature changes and the disappearance of spring seasons result in increased thermal stress in building envelopes.
Building envelopes that heat and cool rapidly are exposed to high surface stresses under these conditions and tend to crack. Tested according to impact resistance using hail simulation equipment, Baumit Power System's main components provide high elasticity and durability in facades.
PowerFlex and SilikonTop products are offered as the system's main components. PowerFlex provides high impact resistance in demanding weather conditions, particularly in areas experiencing hail precipitation.
Tests show that with PowerFlex ready-mix mortar, a 3 mm thick base mortar layer applied over thermal insulation boards can achieve 10 Joules of impact resistance. When base mortar thickness is increased to 5 mm, this resistance rises to ≥15 Joules.
In hail simulations conducted, hail resistance is rated in 5 classes depending on the mass and speed of the launched hail.
Starting with HW1 in this classification, the goal is to prevent damage when a small ice lump (approximately pea or chickpea-sized) is launched at approximately 50 km/hour at the external facade thermal insulation system. With a 3 mm base mortar layer created using Baumit PowerFlex, hail resistance rises to HW3 level.
That is, hail lumps averaging 12 grams (hazelnut-sized) striking the facade at 80 km/hour cause no damage. When mortar thickness is increased to 5 mm, hail resistance reaches HW5, meaning even very large lumps cannot damage the facade.
With an HW5 hail-resistant system, safe building envelopes can be created in more than 90 percent of threat zones. With Baumit Power System having a 5 mm base mortar layer, problem-free and secure facades can be achieved even in the coldest climate conditions.
Baumit SilikonTop, a silicone-based ready coating offered within the Power System, achieves equivalent elasticity and impact resistance to the base mortar layer. The system as a whole demonstrates the highest resistance to external environmental conditions.
Baumit Power System is presented as an ideal product for all facades in cold climate zones requiring high resistance to impacts, as well as in facades exposed to direct impacts such as schools, kindergartens or playgrounds, areas exposed to vehicle collisions such as garages and parking lots, public buildings and apartment entrances.
