Workshop on 'Next-Generation Battery Technologies' held at SAÜ with broad participation.

Sakarya University (SAÜ) Battery Technologies Society and Lithium-Ion Battery Research Laboratory (LIPGUM) organised the "Next-Generation Battery Technologies Workshop". The workshop held in Prof. Dr. Fuat Sezgin Hall at SAÜ Culture and Congress Centre covered topics including Sodium-Ion Battery Technologies, Lithium-Air Battery Technologies, Lithium-Sulfur Battery Technologies and Redox Flow Battery Technologies. Opening remarks at the workshop were delivered by SAÜ Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Hatem Akbulut, who said: "We can evaluate all battery types we develop in line with humanity's technology needs within the next-generation battery category. Energy storage is described in sources as a strategic field. We started work on this area considering it strategic for our country. Through such workshops, we should strive to ensure universities and the industry in Turkey work together. At the same time, our country should determine its own roadmap while developing batteries and make progress by training students in this field."

A new life taking shape around storage

Continuing the workshop, Assoc. Prof. Muhsin Mazman from T Dinamik team noted that storage is a general concept and is not bound to a specific battery technology, stating: "Storage actually involves the production, transmission and distribution of electricity or energy. There is also an additional field we call storage used in all these areas. The storage system is a supporting system for more effective use of all fields. A new world order is coming. Within this order, a new life is taking shape especially around storage with the Smart City concept."

Dr. Şerif Kaya from Meta Nikel Kobalt team emphasised that industry-university cooperation is very important for a country's future, saying: "Through this cooperation, we are conducting necessary research to produce the battery our country needs and obtain raw materials, and we are trying to simplify ores. We aim to design the ore we simplify for use in electric vehicles. We are seeing increased use of electric vehicles today. Looking at projections towards 2030, it is estimated that in the coming years, the capacity needed for or used in electric vehicles will exceed that of consumer electronics. The reason for this is that the raw material quantity in consumer electronics is at the gram level, while in electric vehicles it is at the kilogram level. Considering that millions of vehicles are produced, demand here seems to increase further. For this reason, we aimed to develop raw materials to be used in electric vehicles."

Energy sources in our lives: Batteries

Atatürk University Lecturer Dr. Melike Sevim discussed electrode materials for rechargeable batteries, the relationship between energy and storage types and batteries, and subsequently the preparation of electrocatalysts and electrochemical battery testing.

Lecturer Dr. Sevim stated: "With increasing global energy use, our most important current issue is how to increase our energy capacity. Looking far back in history, there is an evolution in energy storage from non-rechargeable batteries, through zinc-carbon to rechargeable batteries. Using next-generation battery technologies to produce and store energy is the most important alternative. We are conducting research on how to synthesise these batteries, which are the energy source of our life, with good materials and how we can contribute to electric vehicles."
