Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeki Candan Receives "Distinguished Young Scientist Award"

The Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA) has announced the recipients of its 2019 Distinguished Young Scientist Awards (GEBİP). According to the announced results, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeki Candan, faculty member of the Forest Industry Engineering Department at Istanbul University-Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Forestry, was among the 28 recipients of the 2019 "Distinguished Young Scientist Award". The TÜBA-GEBİP Awards, granted since 2001 to distinguished young scientists working in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, health sciences and social sciences to encourage them to continue their scientific work in Turkey, establish their own research groups, and recognize and promote Turkey-based internationally qualified projects and publications, provide financial support to award recipients for 3 years, as well as additional support to doctoral students in the thesis stage. In addition to financial support, award recipients receive mentoring from academy members and support to participate in international scientific events. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zeki Candan said: "Nanoscience and nanotechnology began to gain prominence from the 2000s onwards. There are applications in a wide variety of fields, from genetic research to space-aircraft research, from energy to automotive, from medicine-pharmaceuticals to food, from textiles to the chemical industry, from electrical-electronics to forest products industry.
After acquiring experience in various research and investigations in this field in the United States particularly in the mid-2000s, we decided to pursue doctoral studies in our field in this area in our country.
Together with my doctoral advisor Prof. Dr. Turgay AKBULUT, we wrote several project proposals in the field of nanotechnology and began to establish laboratory infrastructure in our university in 2009 using funds secured from both government resources and the private sector, and in 2010 we completed the establishment of the "Nanotechnology Laboratory" and "Thermal Analysis Laboratory" within our university. Additionally, our research and development and innovation work continues with another highly successful team in our field on Industry 4.0, smart products/smart manufacturing systems/smart factories/smart cities. In addition to our memberships in leading scientific associations in our field in various countries, particularly the United States, we serve as board members, committee and advisory board members. Our research is also supported by TUBITAK and the European Union COST. Beyond this, I serve as an editor, editorial board member and referee in numerous international journals.
