RUSAL Moves to Industrial-Scale Production of Low-Carbon Aluminum Can Sheet

RUSAL, one of the world's leading aluminum producers, has announced that it has moved into the second phase of production for flat ingots with a record-low carbon footprint. The new value, which stands below 3 tons of CO₂ per ton of aluminum on a full-scope calculation basis, was recorded as the lowest carbon emission level the company has achieved in its current production operations. These advanced-technology ingots will be rolled into strip and supplied to RUSAL's business partners for use in producing Russia's first low-carbon aluminum beverage cans. This phase of the initiative, launched in June 2025, shows that the company has now rolled out its sustainable production solutions on a fully industrial scale.

RUSAL, one of the world's leading aluminum producers, has announced the transition to phase two of flat ingot production with record-low carbon footprint. The new value, achieved at below 3 tonnes of CO₂ per aluminum on a full scope basis, represents the lowest carbon emissions reached in the company's current production operations. These advanced ingots will be converted into strip and made available to RUSAL's business partners for use in Russia's first low-carbon aluminum beverage cans production. This phase of the initiative, launched in June 2025, demonstrates that the company is now deploying its sustainable production solutions at full industrial scale.

Optimized Production Technology Reducing Carbon Emissions
The low-carbon sheet produced within the new phase was manufactured using a specially optimized material composition. The composition comprises:

-64% recycled content,

-ALLOW INERTA (10.5% of the composition), produced using industry's lowest carbon footprint inert anode technology,

-Primary aluminum produced from hydropower

These three core components.

Increased use of recycled aluminum is highlighted as one of the most effective methods for decarbonizing products, while breakthrough technologies such as inert anodes significantly reduce environmental impact in primary metal production.

Closed-Loop Production Model at Industrial Scale
The project creates a fully integrated value chain spanning from scrap collection and technology development through to packaging production and retail distribution. Through this structure, stakeholders from different sectors reduce their environmental footprint within a common closed-loop system, accelerating the transition to circular economy.

This business model is positioned as a new sustainability-focused industry standard in the aluminum supply chain.

Leadership in Green Technologies
RUSAL aims to deepen two strategic areas: the integration of recycled content into production processes and the large-scale deployment of inert anode technology. These approaches significantly reduce CO₂ emissions at facilities while enabling the company to offer products to market with lower environmental impact.

This technological transformation has produced concrete results with a new aluminum beverage can series developed together with business partners in the fast-moving consumer goods sector. Each can is presented with an ALLOW label demonstrating its minimal environmental impact.

This initiative not only strengthens RUSAL's leadership in developing green technologies in the packaging sector; it also raises sustainability standards for the entire global market.
