PepsiCo Suadiye Production Facility Obtains Biomethanization Environmental License

Operating across all regions where it conducts business, PepsiCo Türkiye implements programs focused on environmental and social sustainability. The company has now added a new initiative to its work in Turkey under the framework of its "Performance with Purpose" vision, which it defines as integrating strategies and policies that will ensure sustainable long-term growth into its operations. The PepsiCo Suadiye Plant, which has been operating since 1995, is taking its work one step further. Since 2007, the facility has been processing organic waste generated during production to generate energy. Now, with a license obtained from the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, it will accept organic waste from external sources and produce energy. "Biomethanization" work—a process in which organic waste is converted into biogas and fermented products through biochemical reactions—has been ongoing at the Suadiye Plant for over 10 years. At the production facility, which has 26,000 m² of enclosed space, a total of 24,480 tons of potatoes and 4,244 tons of corn are processed annually. Thanks to the Organic Waste Facility established at the Suadiye plant for the first time among PepsiCo factories in Turkey, the plant has been operating with zero waste since 2012. Beginning in 2014, organic waste from production has been processed in Anaerobic Reactors with 4,200 m³ of wet volume at the Suadiye Plant Organic Waste Facility. After being utilized for energy production, the remaining waste is used to produce Organomineral Fertilizer "Naturalis" for use in PepsiCo's potato production areas. With Naturalis, chemicals used in fertilizer production are reduced by 40%, while the amount of chemicals entering the soil is minimized. As a result, while achieving the "zero waste" target, CO² emissions from the process are reduced by 11.5%.
