Optimized Tooling Kits Support Diverse Applications and Machine Tools

The modular structure inherent in three Sandvik Coromant tooling product families—Coromant Capto®, Coromant EH and CoroTurn® SL—can offer significant advantages for manufacturers wanting to equip a single machine tool or an entire factory. Rather than spending money on separate tools for each machine, part and feature, modular tooling solutions enable machine shops to create optimized tooling kits by maintaining only small inventories of standard components to accommodate all applications.
Åke Axner, Global Product Manager in Machine Integration, says: "Establishing a modular tooling strategy brings a standardized solution to the entire shop and reduces the need for tools with long lead times and high engineering costs".
"A typical example is the engineered Coromant Capto. This modular tooling concept offers tool holders that can be mounted directly to the spindle nose for rapid changeover, as well as a wide variety of extension and reduction adapters that allow the attachment of tools in different lengths and design features independent of the machine interface unit." Similarly, the Coromant EH system, recently introduced for rotating applications with interchangeable cutting heads up to 32 mm, provides users with a wide variety of solid carbide cutting heads, interchangeable milling tools, drilling heads, integrated machine adapters and tool shanks. The system offers advantages to large machining centers requiring access over long distances and small-to-medium sized machining and turning centers with critical dimensional requirements. Another modular product family from Sandvik Coromant is the CoroTurn SL turning modular system. The Gear Lock (SL) interface unit is highly rigid and enables users to create a wide range of tool combinations for both internal and external diameter machining operations from a small inventory of adapters and cutting heads. Hard-to-reach part features represent an example of areas where tooling modularity would be particularly valuable. Here, Coromant Capto can combine the correct Coromant EH tool shank and modular adapter that provide both access and reach in rotating applications, while also offering solutions for all different lengths and machine types. Alternatively, the stability requirement in vibration-prone applications can also be considered. This is precisely where the modularity of CoroTurnSL leverages the advantages of Quiet Tools™ damped drilling bars and delivers productivity and tight tolerances in applications with long reach distances.
