Kocaer Çelik Becomes Only Turkish Steel Company with Approved Science-Based Targets

Kocaer Çelik, a pioneer in sustainable production and the transition to a low-carbon economy, has achieved the distinction of being the only Turkish company in its sector with both Near-Term (2030) and Net Zero (2050) emission reduction targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

SBTi is a globally recognized initiative created through collaboration between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). The initiative encourages companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C target and independently evaluates and approves emission reduction plans against scientific criteria.

"Shaping the Future of Steel with Science"
Kocaer Çelik Board Chairman Hakan Kocaer made the following statement regarding the process:

"Our company has committed science-based targets to SBTi aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its operations as part of efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Upon completion of the validation process, both our near-term (2030) and net zero (2050) emission reduction commitments have been approved and certified. This approval once again confirms the international validity of our roadmap aligned with climate science."

On the Path to Sustainable Production with Science-Based Targets

Based on targets determined using 2022 as the baseline year:

42% reduction in absolute greenhouse gas emissions from Scope 1 and 2,

51.6% reduction in Scope 3 emissions per ton of steel produced.

In the long term, a 90% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2050 and a 97% reduction in Scope 3 emissions per ton of steel are targeted.

These targets demonstrate that Kocaer Çelik has brought its production operations into full alignment with the Paris Agreement's 1.5°C global warming limit.
