According to data from the Istanbul Chemical Substances and Products Exporters Association (İKMİB), chemical exports in May increased 10.70% compared to May 2017, reaching USD 1 billion 468 million. Compared to April 2018, exports grew 8.52%.
Spain ranked first among countries with the highest chemical exports in May, with chemical export figures of USD 95 million 702 thousand.
Chemical industry exports, Turkey's third-largest exporting sector, continue to grow. Spain, Germany and Iraq led in May chemical exports, while the sector's May exports reached USD 1 billion 468 million.
Spain Was the Top Chemical Exporting Destination in May
Spain was the country receiving the most chemical exports in May. Chemical exports to Spain were USD 27 million 611 thousand in May 2017, while in May 2018 they reached USD 95 million 702 thousand with a 246.6% increase.
Other countries in the top ten for the sector's May exports after Spain were Germany, Iraq, United Kingdom, Egypt, Italy, USA, Belgium, Greece and People's Republic of China.
Plastics and Products Maintain Leading Position
In subsectors, plastics and products exports remained the sector with the highest exports in May, ranking first with USD 525 million 745 thousand in exports.
In second place, with USD 221 million 471 thousand in exports, were
mineral fuels, oils and products, while inorganic chemicals exports ranked third with USD 157 million 741 thousand.
Other sectors in the top ten following inorganic chemicals were: rubber and rubber goods, pharmaceutical products, essential oils and cosmetics, paints, varnishes, inks and preparations, soaps and washing preparations, organic chemicals and miscellaneous chemical substances.
Looking at the sector's five-month export performance, exports in the January-May period reached USD 7 billion 8 million, representing a 5.27% increase compared to the same period last year. The countries with the highest exports during this period were Germany, Spain, Iraq, USA, Egypt, Italy, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Iran and Greece.
Evaluating the chemical sector's May performance,
İstanbul Chemical Substances and Products Exporters Association (İKMİB) Board Chairman Adil Pelister stated: "In May, our chemical sector, which is Turkey's third-largest exporting sector, achieved USD 1 billion 468 million in exports with an 8.52% increase compared to the previous month.
In addition to Spain, where we exported the most in May, the increase in our exports to Belgium is noteworthy. Our exports to Spain reached USD 95 million 702 thousand with a 246.6% increase compared to May last year, while our exports to Belgium grew 230.9% compared to the same month last year, reaching USD 47 million 19 thousand.
Looking at our subsectors, while the Plastics and Products sector maintains its leading position, we see a 53.17% increase in the Inorganic Chemicals sector this month compared to May last year. In the five-month period of 2018, our exports reached USD 7 billion 8 million.
During the five-month period in the chemical sector, we exported the most to Germany, Spain, Iraq, USA, Egypt, Italy, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Iran and Greece," he said.
