Sector retains its place among top three exporters despite decline in November
Chemicals maintained their position as Turkey's third-largest export sector, despite a decline in exports, which totaled USD 12 billion 715 million over eleven months.
According to data from İKMİB (Istanbul Chemical Exporters Association), chemical exports in the January-November 2016 period declined by 4.09% in volume to 14.951 million tonnes compared with the same period of the previous year, and fell by 10.38% in value to USD 12.715 billion.
The decline in exports was driven by ongoing problems in the sector's major markets and falling export prices.
Despite the decline in exports to USD 12.715 billion over the eleven-month period, chemicals maintained its position as Turkey's third-largest exporting sector.
The top ten countries to which the sector exported most during January-November 2016 were Germany, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Italy, United Kingdom, Netherlands, United States, Greece and Saudi Arabia, respectively.
Among sub-sectors, plastics and plastic products contributed most to exports with USD 4.464 billion in exports, followed by mineral fuels, mineral oils and products with USD 2.352 billion, and rubber and rubber products with USD 1.054 billion.
Chemical sector exports in November declined by 26.81% in volume to 1.243 million tonnes and fell by 10.60% in value to USD 1.164 billion.
The top 10 countries for chemical exports in November were Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Egypt, Iran, Netherlands, United Kingdom, Italy, Saudi Arabia and Bulgaria.

"We are going through a difficult period due to global economic contraction and problems in our neighboring region. Despite all adverse conditions, we continue to make a significant contribution to Turkey's economy as chemical exporters.
We all hope for economic and political normalization as soon as possible. Keeping our morale high, we are continuing at full speed with work to increase our exports within İKMİB" he said.
