Carbon Dioxide Removal Status Report Released A report titled "Carbon Dioxide Removal Status," published by a group of experts from Europe and the United States, highlighted that of approximately 37 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere annually, only 2 billion metric tonnes are captured, and emphasized that this gap must be closed rapidly to achieve global climate targets. The report also noted that new methods used in carbon removal account for only one thousandth of the 2 billion metric tonnes of captured carbon dioxide, and that further investment in these technologies is necessary. Jan Minx, one of the study's authors from the Berlin-based Mercator Global Commons and Climate Change Research Institute, stated that carbon removal efforts are falling "significantly" behind. Minx expressed that a "solid" strategy for achieving the climate targets set in the Paris Agreement could be possible through the widespread adoption and rapid development of carbon capture methods. Oliver Geden from the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, who contributed to the research, said that natural carbon removal tools such as afforestation are less costly but limited compared to artificial methods. It was emphasized that to achieve the international community's goal of keeping the increase in global temperature at 1.5 degrees Celsius, new carbon removal methods must be scaled up 30-fold by 2030.
