IBU Students Produced Biogas

Istanbul Bilgi University Energy Systems Engineering students Ghufran Alkayyali and Abdulmalek Tulimat produced biogas from cassava plant waste. The students aim to create sustainable energy sources through the project. 

Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Erdem Günay, Istanbul Bilgi University Energy Systems Engineering students Ghufran Alkayyali and Abdulmalek Tulimat developed an innovative project to find a solution to energy problems in African countries facing difficulties in accessing electricity. Within the scope of the project, biogas was produced from the waste of the cassava plant, which is widely cultivated in Benin, with the aim of creating sustainable energy sources.  

Ghufran Alkayyali said regarding the project: "In regions like West Africa, electricity access is limited and this situation hampers economic development. We aimed to develop a sustainable solution by using Benin's natural resources." 

'Our project aims to provide electricity and heat to 20,000 households'

Abdulmalek Tulimat described his laboratory experiences as follows: "In university laboratories, we tested the feasibility of obtaining biogas from cassava waste. Our results showed that biogas production is efficient when cassava waste is used with calcium bicarbonate. During this process, we created various batches with different chemicals and worked intensively to find the most efficient method. We achieved successful results and our project aims to provide electricity and heat to at least 20,000 households in Benin." 

"This model can be applied in other countries"

Alkayyali emphasized that the project not only provides an energy solution but also creates a sustainable economic development model. Alkayyali said, "Utilizing cassava plant waste has the potential to both create employment and increase access to energy for the local population in Benin. Since cassava is widely cultivated worldwide, this project can be applied in other countries. The reason we focus on African countries is the low rates of electricity access in these regions and the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions."  

'It is our responsibility to prepare our planet for future generations'

Tulimat stated that they want to inspire young people through their projects, saying "Researching sustainable methods and living without harming the environment is the most valuable legacy we can leave to future generations. As young people, it is our responsibility to prepare our planet for future generations. Carrying this responsibility can make our world a more livable place."
