After crossing the English Channel, Aysu Türkoğlu conquered the North Channel and secured immortality among swimming legends.
As the world watched Aysu's journey with bated breath, the young Turkish swimmer carried the weight of dreams and aspirations with each stroke. Aysu crossed the treacherous 40-kilometre North Channel between Ireland and Scotland in approximately 11 hours 48 minutes 19 seconds, and her resounding achievement was etched into history as proof of the unbreakable will of the human spirit.
Aysu Türkoğlu, the first Turkish woman and youngest Turkish athlete to swim across the North Channel, aims to complete the "7 Oceans" channels within 5 years immediately after crossing the North Channel and also break the Guinness record.
The 22-year-old swimming enthusiast Aysu Türkoğlu etched her name in gold letters into the history of water sports with unwavering determination and exceptional skill during the North Channel stage sponsored by Farmasi. Starting from the town of Bangor in Northern Ireland at 05:45, Aysu swam for approximately 12 hours and reached the shore in Portpatrick, Scotland at 17:31.
Conquering the relentless and perilous 39-kilometre North Channel between Ireland and Scotland, Aysu became the first Turkish person and youngest woman to achieve this extraordinary feat while swimming through these waters for 11 hours 48 minutes 19 seconds, battling against toxic jellyfish. Last year she crossed the English Channel in 16 hours 28 minutes, creating another legendary feat.
The whole world watched in admiration
Following her remarkable victory in crossing the English Channel last year, she continued her training with relentless determination to push her limits beyond the possible. Drawing lessons from her previous English Channel triumph, Aysu carefully refined her mental and physical abilities to lay the foundation for this significant endeavor.
The North Channel, a formidable member of the swimming world's renowned "7 Oceans" club, is known for its seven different and unforgiving sea conditions, including the famous English Channel. As of 2023, a total of 112 athletes have crossed the North Channel.
However, Türkoğlu also earned the titles of first Turkish woman and youngest Turkish athlete to cross this channel. With water temperatures dropping to 12-13 degrees and battling against dangerous jellyfish with great determination, Aysu demonstrated courage and perseverance beyond the ordinary.
Aysu Türkoğlu's cold-resistance training in both summer and winter months fully paid off. The endless hours spent swimming in freezing waters, sleeping in ice-filled baths, and six days a week of rigorous strength training transformed her into a force of nature prepared to achieve the impossible.
During this month's North Channel crossing, where water temperatures were indeed around 12 degrees, tens of thousands of people followed Aysu's strokes live on Instagram.
Aysu's legendary journey to triumph was made possible through months of unwavering dedication and meticulous preparation. Beyond her exceptional physical abilities, Aysu attributes her success to the power of her mind. "The higher your psychological and mental strength, the higher the performance you can achieve in a channel crossing," she said, shedding light on the profound truth that courage and belief elevate the human spirit to its highest potential.
Aysu Türkoğlu's triumphant swim across the North Channel marks a historic moment of national pride for Turkey beyond personal achievement. Her success leaves an indelible mark in the swimming world, serving as an inspiration to future promising swimmers and adventurers for generations to come.
Aysu Türkoğlu demonstrated that dreams know no limits and courage knows no bounds in the face of great adversities. Her story will continue to inspire everyone who pursues their dreams with determination and resolve.
Immediately after crossing the North Channel, Aysu Türkoğlu aims to complete the "7 Oceans" channels within 5 years and break the Guinness record.
